Why do we love this wine?

We love Yarra cabernet, and it appears we're not alone. This wine sits at the bigger end of Yarra styles, but has all the class and finesse, with big firm fruit and tannins to match. Blackcurrant and roasted coffee drive the core of the palate, with some savoury notes of bramble and blackcurrant leaf elevating the finer details of this exceptional drop. A lick of licorice, and delicate hints of crushed violet; this is a cab which is at once bold in its profile and fine with its tannins. Balanced, some may say. Crafted by an exceptional Halliday 5 star producer who knows the Yarra Valley hills back to front, this cabernet epitomises the region. This is a wine that is in its youth - not even a teenager - and will reward more time in bottle if you can be patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yarra Valley cabernets are renowned for their unique balance of power and elegance, thanks to the region's cool climate and diverse soil types. This particular wine exemplifies the Yarra style by combining bold blackcurrant fruit with refined tannins and complex savoury notes like bramble and blackcurrant leaf. The cooler conditions allow for slower ripening, creating wines with natural acidity and finesse that distinguish them from warmer region cabernets.

This wine is currently in its youth and will significantly reward patience in the cellar. Given its 95-point Halliday rating and structured tannins, it has excellent aging potential of 10-15 years from vintage. The firm tannins and concentrated fruit will gradually integrate and soften, while developing tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth that complement the existing blackcurrant and coffee notes.

A 95-point Halliday Wine Companion rating places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, representing exceptional quality and complexity. James Halliday's scoring system is highly respected in Australia, and scores above 94 points indicate wines of remarkable distinction. Combined with the Five Star Winery rating, this suggests consistent excellence from a producer with deep understanding of their terroir and winemaking craft.

The wine's medium body, firm tannins, and savoury complexity make it ideal for rich, protein-based dishes. The blackcurrant and coffee flavours pair beautifully with grilled lamb, aged beef, or game meats, while the bramble and violet notes complement herb-crusted dishes. The structured tannins will cut through fatty foods, making it excellent with mature cheeses or dishes featuring mushrooms and black olives.

Museum Release indicates this wine has been carefully stored by the winery in optimal conditions since bottling, allowing it to develop complexity before release. This extended cellaring means you're receiving a wine that's already begun its evolution, with integrated tannins and developed flavours. It's essentially getting a head start on the aging process, though the wine still has significant potential for further development in your own cellar.
