A dense, gutsy, fruit-driven wine with prominent oak and dusty, lingering tannins. 8 years aging has brought a roundness to the wine whilst leaving the fruit virtually untouched. Dangerously drinkable right now but chuck a couple in the cellar too, just in case.

Why do we love this wine?

Classic Coonawarra - cassis, blackcurrant and dark plums rule the fruit profile whilst the regional characters of eucalypt and allspice pick up the slack. As soon as this wine hits the glass, it's unmistakably Coonawarra, unashamedly bold and unsurprisingly vibrant. 18 months in a mix of French and American barrels brings a complexity to the oak profile and fullness that will leave this wine in seriously good nick for as long your patience lasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates the perfect terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with intense cassis and blackcurrant flavours alongside signature eucalyptus notes. This 2017 vintage showcases these classic regional characteristics beautifully, with the eucalypt and allspice elements providing that unmistakable Coonawarra fingerprint that wine lovers recognise instantly. The region's cool climate ensures excellent acid retention, giving the wine its vibrant character and exceptional ageing potential.

The 18-month maturation in a combination of French and American oak barrels creates a sophisticated flavour profile that balances fruit intensity with structural complexity. French oak contributes elegant tannins and subtle spice notes, while American oak adds vanilla and coconut nuances that complement the wine's natural richness. This dual-oak approach allows the Cabernet's fruit character to shine while building the backbone necessary for extended cellaring, creating layers that will continue to evolve over time.

This wine's rich, full-bodied structure and high tannin content make it an ideal match for red meat dishes, particularly grilled or roasted beef, lamb, and game meats. The eucalyptus and allspice notes complement herb-crusted preparations beautifully, while the wine's acidity cuts through rich, fatty dishes like aged cheeses or slow-cooked braises. Consider pairing with mushroom-based dishes or dark chocolate desserts to highlight the wine's earthy undertones and fruit concentration.

With its excellent structure, balanced acidity, and quality oak integration, this Cabernet has the framework to develop gracefully for 10-15 years from vintage. The wine's current vibrancy and firm tannins suggest it will continue to evolve, with the primary fruit flavours gradually giving way to more complex secondary and tertiary characters like leather, tobacco, and cedar. Proper storage in a cool, dark cellar will allow the wine to reach its full potential, though it's already drinking beautifully now for those who prefer younger styles.

The exceptional ratings of 96 points from Wine Orbit and 95 points from Wine Pilot indicate this Cabernet represents outstanding quality and value in the premium Australian wine category. These scores reflect the wine's perfect balance of regional typicity, technical excellence, and drinking pleasure, suggesting it successfully captures Coonawarra's best characteristics while demonstrating skilled winemaking. Such high scores from respected critics often indicate wines that will age gracefully and represent excellent investment potential for collectors.
