Why do we love this wine?

It is quite a joyful moment when we get our hands on aged cabernet, from a top producer in the world famous cabernet region of Coonawarra. What better wine to show with some age than a cabernet, after all? Halliday would certainly agree, awarding this wine 95pts in a recent tasting. Vibrant blackcurrant and oak have come together, tannins mellowed and earthy, secondary elements emerged. Unless you have a cellar full of aged wine, this is possibly the best chance to pick up some absolutely stunning aged cab for a stupidly good price.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil - a thin layer of red clay over limestone - creates perfect drainage and mineral complexity that Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in. The cool maritime climate allows for slow, even ripening, developing the intense blackcurrant flavours and structured tannins that make this region world-renowned. This 2015 vintage showcases exactly why Coonawarra Cabernet is considered among Australia's finest, with the additional benefit of nearly a decade of bottle age.

At nine years old, this Cabernet has undergone the magical transformation that only time can provide - the aggressive tannins have softened into silky elegance, while complex secondary flavours like chocolate and mint have emerged alongside the primary blackcurrant fruit. The oak integration is now seamless rather than dominant, and earthy, savoury notes add layers of complexity that simply cannot be rushed. Most wine lovers rarely get to experience properly aged premium Cabernet at this accessible price point.

These distinctive flavour notes are hallmarks of well-aged Cabernet Sauvignon, particularly from cool climate regions like Coonawarra. The chocolate notes develop as tannins polymerise and integrate with fruit compounds over time, while the mint character often emerges from eucalyptus influence and the wine's interaction with French oak during extended bottle aging. These tertiary flavours represent the wine's evolution from simple fruit-driven youth to complex, sophisticated maturity.

Scores in the mid-90s from respected critics like Halliday Wine Companion and Wine Orbit indicate this is exceptional wine that ranks among Australia's finest Cabernets. The Special Value Award from Halliday is particularly significant, recognising outstanding quality relative to price - a rare achievement for premium aged wine. These ratings, combined with the wine's current drinking window, suggest you're getting cellar-worthy quality that would typically cost significantly more from established producers.

This 2015 Cabernet is perfectly positioned in its drinking window right now, offering the ideal balance between youthful fruit and mature complexity. While it could certainly develop further over the next 5-8 years, it's drinking beautifully today with those mellowed tannins and emerged secondary characters. The full-bodied structure suggests excellent aging potential, but given the already exceptional value and current perfect drinking condition, there's no need to wait unless you specifically want to explore further evolution.
