Why do we love this wine?

A cellar release with a lucky 9 years of evolution - give it a burl, and you’ll see that it is only starting to touch its prime drinking window. Usually exclusive to the wine producer’s database, this trickles out to us only when we are lucky, somehow our charming wine buyers have managed to get on that lucky list.

Boisterous tannins that have mellowed to a brooding, silky palate, with chunky fruit joined by herbaceous and somewhat meaty notes. There’s still classic cabernet cassis and blackberry, which is accompanied by rosemary, thyme and a long and savoury finish. Be quick, mofo - you too should be so lucky!

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine has been carefully aged by the producer for 9 years before release, allowing the initially boisterous tannins to evolve into a silky, complex palate. Cellar releases like this are typically held back from general market distribution and only made available when the producer believes they've reached optimal drinking condition. The extended ageing has transformed the wine's structure, creating the perfect balance between fruit intensity and savoury complexity that defines premium aged Cabernet.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil - a thin strip of red earth over limestone - creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with distinctive herbaceous notes like the rosemary and thyme found in this bottle. The region's cool climate allows for slow ripening, developing intense cassis and blackberry flavours while maintaining natural acidity. This terroir combination explains why this wine shows both the classic fruit characters and the savoury, meaty complexity that Coonawarra Cabernets are renowned for worldwide.

Decant this wine 1-2 hours before serving to allow the evolved tannins to fully express themselves and the herbaceous aromatics to develop. Serve at 16-18°C to showcase the silky palate texture and complex flavour layers. The wine's savoury finish and meaty notes make it perfect for grilled lamb, aged beef, or hard cheeses, where the mellowed tannins won't overpower but will complement rich, umami-driven flavours.

A 96-point score from Wine Orbit indicates exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of Australian Cabernets. Wine Orbit's five-star rating system and their specific expertise in Australian wines means this score reflects not just current drinking pleasure, but recognition of the wine's complexity, balance, and ageing potential. The combination of high professional ratings and strong Vivino consumer scores (4.3/5) suggests this wine delivers both critical acclaim and broad appeal.

This wine is entering its prime drinking window after 9 years of evolution, with the tannins having mellowed to silky perfection while retaining excellent structure. The description suggests it's 'only starting to touch its prime', meaning you can enjoy it now for its current complexity or cellar it for another 5-10 years for further development. Coonawarra Cabernets of this quality typically peak between 10-15 years, so you have flexibility to drink now or hold for even greater tertiary character development.
