Why do we love this wine?

Ask anyone, serious Coonawarra cabernet never comes cheap. What you won’t find in this wine is that peppermint choc-chip ice-cream flavour. Rather, you’d find a subtle, smooth cedar, tobacco and dark chocolate characters with fine elegant tannins that effortlessly slide down the throat. Even the most staunch lover of Shiraz will agree that there’s no better red wine match with slow cooked lamb than aged Cabernet and one can only imagine how good this will be after an hour in the decanter. This might be a decade old, but it's still looking youthful, a positive sign for a decade or more still to come.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine earned James Halliday's Special Value Award alongside an impressive 96 points, which is remarkable for any Coonawarra Cabernet. The region's terra rossa soil and cool climate produce some of Australia's most age-worthy Cabernets, typically commanding premium prices. At a decade old, this wine has developed the complex cedar and tobacco notes that define great Coonawarra Cabernet, yet remains youthful with excellent cellaring potential.

The 2013 vintage was exceptional in Coonawarra, producing wines with perfect balance between power and elegance. This particular wine showcases the vintage's hallmark characteristics - refined tannins without the herbaceous mintiness that can sometimes dominate younger Coonawarra Cabernets. The fact it's described as 'still looking youthful' after a decade indicates the 2013's excellent structure and aging potential.

Unlike many Australian Cabernets that emphasise bold fruit flavours, this Coonawarra expression focuses on savoury complexity with cedar, tobacco, and dark chocolate notes. The absence of the region's sometimes-present eucalyptus character allows the wine's elegant structure to shine. Being from old vines and a single vineyard, it offers concentrated flavours with remarkable finesse rather than overwhelming power.

Decant this wine for at least an hour before serving to allow the complex aromatics to fully develop and any sediment to settle. Serve at 16-18°C to showcase its full-bodied character without masking the subtle cedar and tobacco nuances. The wine's elegant tannin structure means it will continue to evolve in the glass, revealing new layers of flavour throughout your meal.

This wine's cedar and tobacco complexity makes it perfect for slow-cooked lamb, as mentioned, but also excels with aged beef, game meats, or rich mushroom dishes. The refined tannins won't overpower delicate preparations, while the wine's savoury depth complements herbs like rosemary and thyme. Hard aged cheeses like vintage cheddar or aged gouda also pair beautifully with its chocolate and spice notes.
