Why do we love this wine?

Thank you Coonawarra, you’ve done it again! This has some serious ‘wow’ factor, intensely concentrated and phenomenally executed. A very Bordeaux blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot gives this wine effortless shape, and a little bit of love in French and American oak for a generous 20 months really elevates this to luscious levels. Dark purple with a dense palate of spiced cherry and ripe blackcurrant, this wine is well balanced with toasted bread and sweet vanilla honey notes. Drink now or let it age in your cellar for a few years. A great wine to go in any collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the exceptional terroir of Coonawarra, one of Australia's most prestigious red wine regions known for its famous terra rossa soil. The Bordeaux-style blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot creates a sophisticated structure that mirrors the great wines of France's Left Bank. With 20 months of careful oak maturation in both French and American barrels, this wine demonstrates the winemaker's commitment to creating a premium expression that rivals international benchmarks.

Given the wine's full-bodied structure, high-quality oak treatment, and exceptional ratings, this 2021 vintage has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years from vintage date. The dense concentration and balanced tannins will allow the wine to develop greater complexity over time, with the cocoa, liquorice and mint characteristics evolving into more nuanced secondary flavours. Coonawarra Cabernet blends are renowned for their longevity, often improving significantly with proper cellaring conditions.

This rich, concentrated wine demands equally substantial food pairings to complement its intense flavour profile. Classic matches include grilled ribeye or porterhouse steaks, slow-braised lamb shanks, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The wine's cocoa and liquorice notes make it particularly excellent with game meats like venison or duck, while the mint characteristics provide a beautiful contrast to rich, herb-crusted roasts.

The remarkable consistency of ratings from 95-97 points across multiple respected wine publications indicates exceptional winemaking quality and vintage conditions. Ray Jordan's 97-point score from Wine Pilot, combined with Wine Orbit's 96 points and Wine Showcase's 95 points, demonstrates that this wine meets the highest technical and sensory standards. Such unanimous critical acclaim typically reflects perfect fruit selection, masterful blending, and optimal oak integration - hallmarks of premium Australian winemaking.

The combination of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot represents Australia's interpretation of the classic Bordeaux Left Bank style, adapted to our unique climate and soil conditions. This blend allows winemakers to achieve greater complexity than single varietals, with cabernet sauvignon providing structure, merlot adding softness and fruit sweetness, and cabernet franc contributing aromatic lift and spice. Coonawarra's cool climate is particularly suited to this style, producing wines that successfully bridge Old World elegance with New World fruit intensity.
