Why do we love this wine?

This Crianza, crafted with 90% tempranillo and 10% graciano walks and talks Rioja. From the slightly warmer Rioja Oriental subregion, it is classic on the nose with coffee, dark chocolate and spice. The palate mirrors the nose, with the addition of juicy plums, caramel and cedar. A year in American oak gives the wine abundant, grippy tannin and toasty notes of vanilla. Still in a youthful phase, I see this wine mellowing in texture and gaining complexity over the next decade as fruit gives way to more herbaceous characteristics. Fans of old school Rioja will be very pleased with this wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Crianza comes from Rioja Oriental, the warmest of Rioja's three subregions, which produces wines with more concentrated fruit flavours and robust structure. The blend of 90% tempranillo with 10% graciano is particularly noteworthy - graciano adds colour intensity, acidity and spice complexity that pure tempranillo wines often lack. The American oak ageing (rather than French) imparts distinctive vanilla and coconut notes that complement the wine's natural coffee and chocolate characteristics.

While delicious now, this 2019 Crianza is still in its youthful phase and will reward patience over the next decade. As it matures, the grippy tannins will soften and the fruit-forward plum and caramel notes will evolve into more complex herbaceous and earthy characteristics typical of aged Rioja. The wine's solid structure and American oak backbone provide excellent cellaring potential, with peak drinking likely between 2026-2032.

The wine's medium body, grippy tannins and coffee-chocolate profile make it ideal for grilled meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with smoky barbecue flavours. The graciano component adds enough acidity to cut through rich, fatty dishes like chorizo or aged manchego cheese. The vanilla and cedar notes from American oak also complement dishes with similar warm spice profiles, such as Moroccan tagines or Mexican mole.

The three international gold medals reflect this wine's exceptional quality-to-price ratio and classic Rioja character. Competition judges particularly value wines that authentically express their region's terroir while maintaining balance and complexity. This Crianza demonstrates textbook Rioja characteristics - the tempranillo-graciano blend, American oak integration, and the distinctive coffee-spice profile that defines the appellation - executed with precision and consistency.

Crianza is Spain's entry-level aged wine classification, requiring minimum two years of ageing with at least one year in oak barrels. This legal requirement ensures the wine develops the characteristic vanilla, cedar and spice notes from barrel contact while retaining fresh fruit flavours. The classification guarantees a level of complexity and smoothness that distinguishes it from younger Joven wines, making Crianza the perfect introduction to traditional Spanish winemaking methods.
