Vibrant juicy fruit that's packing a bit of punch. The fruit is edging toward Turkish delight and raspberry drops but it never veers fully into the confectionary space. Focused, luscious and full.

Why do we love this wine?

The most recent release from Brightwater Vineyards has all the hallmarks of classic Nelson pinot noir The acid drives the wine through the finish, collecting all that fresh fruit vibrancy along the way and delivering it neatly to the back of the palate where it leaves lasting impression. Classic Nelson pinot that promises a lot and still manages to over deliver. This is the last vintage for this icon producer as they close their doors. It's sad to see them go, but as they say: all good things...

Frequently Asked Questions

This 2021 vintage represents the swan song of Brightwater Vineyards, an iconic Nelson producer that has sadly closed its doors. The wine embodies everything that made Brightwater legendary - classic Nelson pinot noir character with vibrant acidity that carries fresh fruit flavours through to a memorable finish. It's a poignant farewell that over-delivers on expectations, making it both a collector's piece and a testament to the producer's enduring quality.

Nelson's unique terroir produces Pinot Noirs with distinctive bright acidity and fresh fruit vibrancy, both hallmarks evident in this Brightwater release. The region's maritime climate and varied soils create wines that balance elegance with intensity, allowing the natural acidity to drive the wine's structure while preserving the delicate fruit characteristics. This creates the classic Nelson style that wine enthusiasts recognise - refined yet expressive, with excellent ageing potential.

The wine's savoury notes and black cherry-raspberry fruit profile make it incredibly versatile with food. The bright acidity cuts through rich dishes like duck confit or salmon, while the medium body won't overpower lighter fare such as roasted chicken or mushroom risotto. The savoury elements also complement aged cheeses beautifully, and the wine's elegance makes it perfect for charcuterie boards featuring prosciutto or salami.

The exceptional ratings (94 points from Wine Orbit, Five Stars from multiple critics) reflect the wine's perfect balance of classic Nelson characteristics with outstanding execution. Critics have praised how the wine's acidity drives the flavour profile, collecting and delivering fruit vibrancy in a seamless, memorable way. The fact that it 'over-delivers' on expectations suggests remarkable value and complexity that exceeds what one might anticipate, earning recognition as a standout example of New Zealand Pinot Noir.

Store this wine in a cool, dark place at around 12-15°C to preserve its delicate fruit characteristics and vibrant acidity. Serve slightly below room temperature (14-16°C) to showcase the wine's elegance and allow the savoury and fruit notes to express themselves fully. Given its quality and the producer's closure, this wine has excellent cellaring potential and could develop additional complexity over the next 5-8 years, though it's drinking beautifully now.
