Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Fine boned and elegant Nelson pinot from Brightwater Vineyards. An immediate swirl of tart cherry and pretty florals leaps out of the glass. Those aromatics give way to some more intricate anise, dried rose petal, and a savoury grassiness. There is real delicacy and poise at play. That's not to say the wine itself is without body or palate weight; it's got that in spades. A rich fruit profile gives way to a lasting, brightly acidic and fresh finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nelson's unique terroir combines warm days with cool nights, creating ideal conditions for Pinot Noir's delicate balance. The region's clay and limestone soils, along with its maritime influence, help produce wines with the elegant structure and bright acidity showcased in this Brightwater example. Nelson Pinot Noirs are renowned for their fine-boned character and ability to express both power and finesse.

Serve this Brightwater Pinot Noir slightly below room temperature at 14-16°C to highlight its delicate aromatics of cherry and florals. Decanting for 30 minutes will allow the more intricate notes of anise and dried rose petal to emerge fully. Use a large-bowled Burgundy glass to concentrate the wine's elegant bouquet and enhance the interplay between its fruit richness and savoury grassiness.

The wine's combination of tart cherry fruit and savoury grassiness makes it perfect for duck breast with cherry sauce or herb-crusted lamb. Its bright acidity and medium body also pair beautifully with wild mushroom risotto or roasted salmon with herbs. The floral notes and elegant structure complement soft cheeses like Camembert or aged Gruyère.

The exceptional ratings from critics like Michael Cooper (96pts) and Wine Orbit (95pts) reflect this wine's rare combination of delicacy and substance. Critics appreciate how it achieves the classic Pinot Noir paradox of being both ethereal and substantial, with complex aromatics that evolve from bright fruit to sophisticated savoury notes. The wine demonstrates textbook Nelson terroir expression while maintaining perfect balance.

This 2020 Brightwater Pinot Noir is drinking beautifully now, showing excellent integration of its fruit and savoury elements. However, its fine structure and bright acidity suggest it will develop additional complexity over the next 5-7 years, with the floral notes likely evolving into more earthy, forest floor characteristics. The wine's elegant tannin structure provides the backbone for graceful ageing.
