This is the kind of barbera that really gets us going - full-bodied, yet bright, with wonderful natural acidity and gorgeously rich fruit flavours. This isn't just one of our favourite barberas, this is one of our favourite Italian wines. Time to get that ragu simmering!

Why do we love this wine?

Rich and full-bodied, with that lively, juicy acidity barbera's famous for - it's what makes the variety so damn food-friendly. Vibrant acidity balances out ripe fruit flavours of blackberries and cherries, while subtle oak integration brings roundness and complexity without taking over the show. Soft, chalky tannins provide structure, leading to a long finish with a touch of warmth that's pleasantly fruity and beautifully balanced. The winemaking here is smart and considered - grapes gently crushed a few hours after hand-picking, seven days of maceration before the skins are removed to emphasise that fruity character, then six months aging with 80% in stainless steel and concrete, 20% in oak. We love this wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barbera's signature high acidity is the key to its incredible food versatility. This natural brightness cuts through rich, fatty dishes while complementing the umami in tomato-based sauces, making it a perfect match for Italian cuisine. The grape's ability to maintain freshness even when fully ripe means it can handle everything from pizza and pasta to grilled meats without overwhelming delicate flavours or being overpowered by bold ones.

The gentle crushing and brief seven-day maceration preserves Barbera's naturally vibrant fruit character while extracting just enough colour and tannins for structure. The split aging - 80% in neutral vessels like stainless steel and concrete, with only 20% in oak - allows the grape's inherent cherry and blackberry flavours to shine while adding subtle complexity. This restrained approach prevents the oak from masking Barbera's hallmark acidity and fresh fruit expression.

Barbera d'Alba represents the premium tier of Barbera production in Piedmont, with stricter regulations and superior vineyard sites compared to basic Barbera d'Asti or Barbera del Monferrato. The Alba zone's calcareous soils and optimal hillside exposures produce more concentrated, age-worthy wines with greater complexity. These wines typically show more structure and elegance while maintaining Barbera's characteristic freshness and food-friendly nature.

This 2023 Barbera d'Alba is drinking beautifully now, showcasing its fresh fruit character and balanced acidity at peak expression. While Barbera is generally made for earlier consumption than Piedmont's Nebbiolo-based wines, quality examples like this can develop additional complexity over 3-5 years. The wine's structure and James Suckling's 90-point rating suggest it has the backbone to reward short-term cellaring, though its immediate appeal makes waiting entirely optional.

Sustainable farming practices typically involve reducing chemical inputs, promoting biodiversity in the vineyard, and working with natural cycles to maintain soil health. For boutique producers like Bric Cenciurio, this often means hand-harvesting, cover cropping between vine rows, and integrated pest management rather than blanket pesticide use. These methods not only protect the environment but often result in more expressive wines that better reflect their terroir, as healthy soils and balanced ecosystems produce grapes with greater complexity and character.
