There’s something unmistakably Coonawarra about this Cabernet, and it's not just the name 'Brand' stamped all over the label – red earth, a cool lift of mint, and that plush core of blackcurrant fruit. It’s a wine with both boots-on-the-ground authenticity and its own form of gutsy finesse. This is the real deal.

Why do we love this wine?
From Coonawarra's 'mid-west' comes a cabernet with down-to-earth character that slowly but surely ruins all other Coonawarra cabs. Weighty but vibrant, brimming with cherry, blackcurrant, after-dinner mint and that unmistakable chocolate ripple biscuit richness. Ripe berry fruit lifted by juicy acidity, framed in fine tannins that tighten beautifully at the finish. Cool, lingering freshness woven with blackcurrant pastille and powdered chocolate - this is textbook contemporary Coonawarra. Plush, powerful, persistent. Dense blackberry pastilles and mulberry with tobacco, mocha, fennel and clove complexity. Dusty tannins coat the palate from coast to coast, while judicious oak hints at where bottle age will take this beauty - give it a good decant and you'll be well-rewarded... leave it a few years and you'll be in heaven.

An elegant and refined Cabernet capturing the style and pedigree of Coonawarra. Lovely perfume notes of red berry and cedar with a floral lift. And just a trace of oyster-shell-like minerality. The palate is still quite tight, but there’s nice flesh there, coiling around a core of fine tannins and fine-grained oak. It gathers beautifully on the middle palate before driving through to a focused, long finish. This is elegance personified.

Campbell Mattinson
This is an emphatic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon in anyone’s language. It’s rich, luscious, tannic and well-balanced, with excellent length, muscle, fruit and flair. It tastes of blackcurrant, gravel, blueberry, woodsmoke and choc-mint, and while it carries herbal inflections they are whispers at most – doing only enough to remind us that we are in cabernet territory, proud and true. This is a velvety wine with plenty of flex; it’s outstanding.

Excellent contemporary Coonawarra Cabernet. This Brand & Sons Yates is a belter. It opens up a treat revealing black olives, bay leaf and a flicker of after-dinner mint before generous plums and blackberries flood the palate. Dark chocolate adds richness, while soft, pliable and plump tannins slowly dry across the mouth, leaving powdery cocoa tannins in their wake. This is the type of wine that can be a little shy on first meeting, but give it time and it starts to reveal its personality. I watched it soften beautifully over a couple of days, with the layers becoming more seductive and increasingly moreish. It may not be the wine that grabs a gold medal in a quick show judging, but patience will elevate this considerably. Decant to embrace now or hold comfortably beyond a decade.

Wine Orbit
Offering excellent fruit purity and graceful complexity, the wine shows blackcurrant, fennel, violet, tobacco, and fine oak aromas on the nose. The palate displays terrific weight and richness, wonderfully framed by a supple texture and chalky tannins, leading to a prolonged, harmonious and structured finish. At its best: 2027 to 2038.
