Breathtaking. All you have to do is say the name of this producer and every Somm, Dick and Harry within earshot will start salivating. This wine's weighty reputation precedes it, but does it live up to the hype? Is the pope catholic? An absolute pleasure to drink. No notes.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Wines like this don’t come around very often. This producer is arguably New Zealand's best and most well-known winery, a reputation like that has got to be earned. Like many a Hawke’s Bay producer, they make wines in the spirit of Bordeaux. This is their top-of-the-range, Right Bank-inspired red blend. It’s a stunner upon release each vintage, but add in ten years of ageing in the winery’s cellar, and you’ve got something epic. The fruit still jumps out of the glass, primarily sweet plum and blackberry. Layered into that are the secondary characteristics that only careful cellaring can bring forth. You’ll find tea leaf, olive tapenade, liquorice, and a smattering of dried herbs. The finish is lengthy with cleansing acid and chalky tannins. We’ll never see this specific vintage again at the ‘Fo (and maybe not any other vintage of this wine), so best to get in while we still have stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Extended cellaring has transformed this wine's character dramatically, developing complex secondary flavours like tea leaf, olive tapenade, and liquorice that complement the original fruit. The ten years in the winery's cellar allowed the tannins to soften and integrate while preserving the wine's structural integrity. This evolution demonstrates how premium Bordeaux-style blends from Hawke's Bay can rival their French counterparts in terms of ageing potential and complexity.

Hawke's Bay's warm, dry climate and diverse soil types mirror conditions found in Bordeaux's Right Bank regions like Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. The region's long growing season allows for optimal ripening of Bordeaux varietals, while the maritime influence provides crucial diurnal temperature variation. This terroir combination enables producers to craft wines with the structure and elegance characteristic of classic Bordeaux, as evidenced by this wine's exceptional critical acclaim.

Achieving 100 points from Raymond Chan alongside 98 points from Bob Campbell MW indicates this wine represents the pinnacle of New Zealand winemaking excellence. These scores reflect not just the wine's immediate appeal, but its perfect balance of fruit intensity, structural complexity, and ageing potential. Such unanimous critical acclaim from respected wine authorities confirms this producer's reputation as arguably New Zealand's finest winery.

The wine's rich plum and blackberry fruit, combined with savoury secondary notes of olive tapenade and herbs, makes it perfect for robust dishes like lamb with rosemary or beef wellington. The chalky tannins and cleansing acidity can handle rich, fatty meats while the wine's complexity won't be overwhelmed by strong flavours. Consider pairing with aged cheeses or game meats to complement the wine's developed, earthy characteristics.

This wine is drinking beautifully now, having already undergone a decade of careful cellaring that has perfectly integrated its components. The balance between primary fruit flavours and developed secondary characteristics suggests it's at an optimal drinking window. However, given its exceptional structure and the producer's track record, it could continue evolving gracefully for several more years, though the current harmony of flavours makes immediate consumption highly rewarding.
