Why do we love this wine?

This is classic Gran Reserva Rioja, which indicates at least five years ageing, and minimum two years in oak barrel. This wine was picked on the riper side, so there is an abundance of juicy fruit character balancing the sweet and spicy oak. At 7 years old, all elements are singing harmoniously and there isn’t a string out of tune. The colour is still dark and the palate firm and grippy. The fruit is on the plush side, balanced by nice tannin. This wine offers a great experience to the intrepid drinker, with the fruit power to make you feel at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gran Reserva is Spain's highest classification, requiring a minimum of five years ageing with at least two years in oak barrels. This extended maturation process transforms the wine's character, allowing the bold Tempranillo fruit to integrate seamlessly with sweet, spicy oak influences. The result is a sophisticated wine where all elements harmonise beautifully, creating depth and complexity that younger wines simply cannot achieve.

Tempranillo is Rioja's flagship grape because it possesses the ideal balance of fruit intensity and structural backbone needed for extended oak ageing. Its naturally high acidity and moderate tannins provide the foundation for long-term cellaring, while its cherry and blackcurrant flavours develop remarkable complexity when combined with traditional Spanish oak. This variety's ability to maintain freshness while gaining sophistication makes it the cornerstone of Spain's most prestigious red wines.

At seven years old, this 2016 has reached a beautiful drinking window where the initial fruit exuberance has mellowed into elegant harmony with the oak influences. The wine has evolved from its youthful intensity to show more nuanced flavours, with the tannins softening while maintaining structure. This maturation period allows the orange peel notes to emerge alongside the core dark fruit, creating the complex flavour profile that makes aged Rioja so distinctive.

Harvesting grapes at optimal ripeness rather than earlier ensures maximum flavour concentration and natural sugar development, resulting in the wine's abundant juicy fruit character. This approach creates a more approachable, fruit-forward style that balances beautifully with the oak's influence, preventing the wine from becoming overly austere or tannic. The riper picking style contributes to the wine's plush texture and makes it more immediately enjoyable while still maintaining the structure needed for proper ageing.

The 95-point score and Gold Medal from the International Wine Challenge represent recognition from one of the world's most rigorous wine competitions, where thousands of wines are blind-tasted by expert panels. These awards specifically validate the wine's exceptional balance between fruit power and oak integration that the judges found exemplary for Gran Reserva Rioja. Such high scores indicate this wine stands among the finest examples of its category, offering both immediate drinking pleasure and the potential for further cellaring.
