As a relatively ‘young’ Rioja winery, Bodegas Altanza have been making their mark in the region by merging modernity and tradition. Their phenomenally balanced wines are immediately captivating; I’m saying that from experience.I first tasted their wines on one particular 40 degree day in Rioja, and although you might imagine that’s not the time for full bodied red wine, right at that moment nothing else felt more appropriate.

The crianza isn’t afraid to brag a little. Traditionally, crianza has been known as the little sibling of the Reserva and Gran Reserva siblings; and while that isn’t untrue, it doesn’t do wines like this justice. 100% tempranillo from a single plot in Rioja Alta, this is vibrant and lifted with that classic Riojan intensity from time in oak- notably of French origin for this modern house. This rivals most wines at this price, and is perfectly fitting for a tapas feast.
