Why do we love this wine?

Did someone ask where the party was at? Well Mofo, we can say that it’s right here. Presenting ‘Capitoso’, the rogue young player here to set the night alight with fun like you’ve never known from a Rioja wine. Sure, there’s still a bit of barrel time in French oak, but mostly it’s just about pure, enthusiastic fruit expression. Cherries and chocolate mingle with redcurrant and raspberries all bound by a dazzling mineral finish. Now, that’s a party.

Frequently Asked Questions

Capitoso breaks the mould of classic Rioja by prioritising vibrant fruit expression over heavy oak influence. While it still sees some French oak barrel time, the focus is on showcasing the pure, enthusiastic character of Tempranillo rather than the extended oak ageing that defines traditional Rioja wines. This creates a more approachable, party-ready style that maintains Rioja's mineral backbone while celebrating the grape's natural cherry and berry flavours.

Serve Capitoso slightly below room temperature at around 16-18°C to highlight its fresh fruit character and mineral finish. The medium-bodied nature and textured, savoury profile make it perfect for casual gatherings or as an aperitif wine. Consider decanting for 30 minutes to allow the cherry and chocolate notes to fully develop, though it's designed to be enjoyed immediately upon opening.

The wine's combination of red fruit, chocolate notes, and mineral finish makes it incredibly food-friendly. Try it with grilled lamb, chorizo and manchego tapas, or mushroom-based dishes that complement its savoury, textured style. The raspberry and spice elements also pair beautifully with barbecued meats or even dark chocolate desserts, while the minerality cuts through rich, creamy sauces.

Capitoso is crafted for immediate enjoyment and represents the modern trend towards earlier-drinking Rioja styles. The 2020 vintage is at its peak now, showcasing the vibrant cherry and redcurrant flavours that define this wine's character. While it could develop for another 2-3 years, the emphasis on fresh fruit expression means it's best enjoyed within the next few years rather than cellared long-term.

The dazzling mineral finish reflects Rioja's distinctive limestone and clay soils, which impart a characteristic chalky backbone to Tempranillo wines. This minerality is what gives Rioja wines their sense of place and helps balance the rich fruit flavours. In Capitoso, this mineral component acts as a counterpoint to the exuberant cherry and chocolate notes, creating complexity and preventing the wine from becoming overly fruit-forward or simple.
