Juicy and fragrant, but powerfully integrated with a spicy, smoky oak profile. When I first tried this shiraz, it was love at first sight (or, sip).

Why do we love this wine?

The 'JGS' is named after Johann Gottlob Schrapel, who arrived to the Barossa in 1844 by Ox cart and established Barossa's first settlement in Bethany. This wine is an ode to that history, and the first vineyards Johann planted in 1852. Today, the Schrapel family continue to own and operate Bethany Wines, with an impeccable eye for quality and storytelling. This shiraz outperforms most by a mile- a testament to the history of this family and their understanding of true Barossa character. That's what you call a standout, Mofo.

Frequently Asked Questions

This JGS Shiraz represents six generations of winemaking expertise from the Schrapel family, who established Barossa's first settlement in 1844. The wine showcases the family's deep understanding of Barossa terroir, with fruit sourced from vineyards first planted by Johann Gottlob Schrapel in 1852. Its exceptional 95-point rating from Wine Showcase demonstrates how this heritage translates into outstanding quality that truly captures authentic Barossa character.

The 2022 vintage delivers the quintessential Barossa Shiraz profile with its full-bodied structure and rich flavour concentration of chocolate, mulberry, and plum. These characteristics reflect the warm continental climate and ancient soils of the Barossa Valley, which produce Shiraz with exceptional depth and complexity. The wine's ability to achieve such high ratings across multiple competitions shows how well this vintage captures the region's renowned ability to produce world-class Shiraz.

This rich, full-bodied Shiraz with its chocolate and dark fruit flavours pairs beautifully with robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked game meats. The wine's structure and tannins can stand up to rich sauces and strong flavours, while its mulberry and plum notes complement dishes with berry-based reductions. For cheese lovers, try it with aged hard cheeses or blue cheese to highlight the wine's complexity.

As a premium Barossa Shiraz from an established producer, this 2022 vintage has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years or more. The wine's full-bodied structure and quality fruit will allow it to develop additional complexity over time, with the chocolate and dark fruit flavours evolving into more savoury, earthy notes. While delicious now, peak drinking will likely occur between 2027-2035, though personal preference for fruit-forward versus developed styles will influence optimal timing.

The 'JGS' represents Bethany's premium tier, honouring founder Johann Gottlob Schrapel and signifying the winery's finest expression of Barossa Shiraz. This designation indicates careful vineyard selection, likely from the estate's oldest or best-performing blocks, combined with meticulous winemaking techniques. The multiple high ratings, including 95 points and Gold Medal recognition, confirm that JGS represents exceptional quality that showcases both the terroir and the family's generations of winemaking knowledge.
