Juicy and fragrant, but powerfully integrated with a spicy, smoky oak profile. When I first tried this shiraz, it was love at first sight (or, sip).

Why do we love this wine?
The 'JGS' is named after Johann Gottlob Schrapel, who arrived to the Barossa in 1844 by Ox cart and established Barossa's first settlement in Bethany. This wine is an ode to that history, and the first vineyards Johann planted in 1852. Today, the Schrapel family continue to own and operate Bethany Wines, with an impeccable eye for quality and storytelling. This shiraz outperforms most by a mile- a testament to the history of this family and their understanding of true Barossa character. That's what you call a standout, Mofo.

Bethany Wines JGS Shiraz 2022, Barossa Valley JGS isn’t a blend, it’s straight Shiraz, and it shows. Named for Johan G Schrapel, the founder of Bethany Wines, this wine carries the elegance of the eastern slopes of the Barossa since 1852. From slightly elevated vineyards above the valley floor, with spectacular views over Bethany Village, it delivers a pure blue-fruited core, fresh acidity, tightly woven oak and a juicy, luscious mid-palate. Deep purple-black with an opaque crimson core. Powerful aromas of blackberry, black plum and blueberry are layered with dark chocolate, cedar, espresso, star anise and subtle violet perfume. The palate is full-bodied with just the right weight, combining concentrated dark and blue fruits with exceptional elegance. Fine-grained tannins and seamlessly integrated oak support the fruit, while vibrant acidity keeps everything fresh and precise. Cocoa, graphite, savoury spice and roasted coffee unfold through the mid-palate before a smooth persistent finish. From the outstanding 2022 vintage, a great reason to stock up on. Vino Masters Score: 96/100 ★★★★★ An elegant, blue-fruited Barossa Shiraz of real class and lasting presence.
