Juicy and fragrant, but powerfully integrated with a spicy, smoky oak profile. When I first tried this shiraz, it was love at first sight (or, sip).

Why do we love this wine?

The 'JGS' is named after Johann Gottlob Schrapel, who arrived to the Barossa in 1844 by Ox cart and established Barossa's first settlement in Bethany. This wine is an ode to that history, and the first vineyards Johann planted in 1852. Today, the Schrapel family continue to own and operate Bethany Wines, with an impeccable eye for quality and storytelling. This shiraz outperforms most by a mile- a testament to the history of this family and their understanding of true Barossa character. That's what you call a standout, Mofo.

Frequently Asked Questions

This JGS Shiraz represents six generations of winemaking expertise from the Schrapel family, who established Barossa's first settlement in 1844. The wine is crafted from some of the region's oldest vineyard sites, originally planted in 1852, giving it access to incredibly mature vine material that produces fruit with exceptional concentration and complexity. The 95-point rating from Wine Showcase confirms this is performing at the top tier of Barossa Shiraz, showcasing the deep understanding of terroir that comes from 170+ years of continuous family ownership.

Full-bodied Shiraz like this JGS delivers maximum impact on the palate, with rich tannin structure and intense fruit concentration that fills your mouth completely. The chocolate, mulberry, and plum flavours are amplified by this weight, creating layers of complexity that evolve as the wine opens up. This style pairs beautifully with robust dishes like grilled red meats or aged cheeses, as the wine's power can stand up to bold flavours without being overwhelmed.

While this 2022 Shiraz is absolutely delicious now, showing beautiful fruit integration and balanced tannins, Barossa Shiraz from established producers like Bethany typically develops even greater complexity with 5-10 years of cellaring. The full-bodied structure and quality fruit suggest this wine will reward patience, developing secondary characteristics like leather, tobacco, and spice notes. If you're buying multiple bottles, enjoy one now to appreciate its youthful vibrancy, then cellar the rest for future enjoyment.

The rich chocolate and dark fruit profile of this JGS Shiraz makes it a natural partner for grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked braised dishes where the wine's full body can complement rather than compete with the food's richness. The mulberry and plum characteristics also work beautifully with game meats like venison or duck, while the chocolate notes create surprising harmony with dark chocolate desserts or strong aged cheeses like vintage cheddar.

The multiple accolades, including 95 points from Wine Showcase and a Gold Medal, reflect the exceptional quality achieved when historic vineyard sites meet generational winemaking knowledge. Bethany's status as an 'Iconic Producer' stems from their consistent ability to express true Barossa character - that perfect balance of power and elegance that the region is famous for. The combination of old vines, family expertise, and ideal vintage conditions in 2022 has created a Shiraz that critics recognise as representing the very best of what Barossa can produce.
