This is a full-bodied, single-vineyard mataro built for fans of the dark and brooding. Rich black fruits, earthy spice, cocoa and smoky meats drive the palate, with sandy tannins and serious structure underneath. Decant for now or chuck it in the cellar until you run out of fingers to count the years on.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This is mataro that doesn’t muck around - a proper, old-school Barossa bruiser. Grown on the cool southern edge of the Valley at Aldo’s Vineyard, near the Adelaide Hills boundary, where deep silty soils over clay help coax serious spice and intensity from the fruit. Right now, it’s dense, dark and tightly coiled. Expect blackberries, mulberries, cocoa and smoky meats - in the best possible way. The oak is seasoned and subtle, the tannins sandy and persistent, and the structure is built to go the distance. It’s all power and potential for now, but give it a decant or a few years in the cellar and it’ll open up into something pretty special. If big reds are your thing, you’re going to love this.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Mataro comes from Aldo's Vineyard on the cooler southern edge of the Barossa Valley, near the Adelaide Hills boundary. The unique location and deep silty soils over clay create a more restrained, spice-driven style compared to the heat-soaked, jammy reds from the valley floor. Mataro (also known as Mourvedre) is naturally a late-ripening variety that thrives in these marginal conditions, developing complex savoury characters and firm tannin structure rather than just power and fruit sweetness.

This is a wine that demands patience and proper handling to show its best. Decant it for at least 2-3 hours before serving to allow the tight, coiled structure to open up and reveal its complexity. Serve at cellar temperature (16-18°C) rather than room temperature to maintain freshness and prevent the alcohol from dominating. The wine's intense, meaty character makes it perfect for rich dishes like braised lamb, grilled steaks, or aged cheeses.

The consecutive 95-point scores from the Barossa Valley Wine Show in both 2022 and 2023 indicate exceptional quality and consistency. Wine show judging is particularly rigorous as wines are tasted blind against their peers, making these scores highly credible. The fact that it achieved the same high score in consecutive years suggests this isn't a fluke vintage but represents the vineyard's true potential and the winemaker's skill in expressing the site's character.

While drinkable now with proper decanting, this Mataro is built for the long haul and will reward patience. The description mentions it's 'tightly coiled' with 'sandy, persistent tannins' - classic indicators of a wine that needs time to integrate and soften. Mataro is known for its exceptional ageing potential, often improving for 10-15 years or more. If you enjoy the primary fruit and spice now, imagine how complex it will become as those tannins mellow and tertiary flavours of leather, earth, and dried herbs develop.

Single vineyard wines like this one from Aldo's Vineyard offer a pure expression of terroir that blends simply cannot match. Mataro is particularly site-sensitive, responding dramatically to soil type, aspect, and microclimate variations. The deep silty soils over clay at this specific location create ideal conditions for the variety's naturally intense, spicy character to shine through. This focused approach allows you to taste not just the grape variety, but the unique personality of this particular patch of Barossa earth.
