95 point Halliday ratings don't just get thrown around for laughs, this is serious. Well, sort of. The wine its self is lively, friendly even, yet complex and, yes, serious, in its own way. Beautiful dark fruit, warming spice and classically Italian structural acid - extremely well done.

Why do we love this wine?

This producer has been pumping out outstanding barbera for years, this isn't the first vintage to score highly from Halliday and we dare say it won't be the last. Up front, this presents very much like you'd expect from any half-decent barbera, blue fruits, spice and raspberry-like acidity. As the wine transforms in the glass we start to see darker, more savoury notes of tobacco, leather and allspice. The finish is long and acid driven with a slight warming spice and even a passing hint of tannin. This wine has sparked some debate around the tasting bench, some of us think we should drink it now, some think we should wait 5 years, but we all agree on one thing: this is a delicious bottle of wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Yarra Valley Barbera showcases how Australian terroir transforms the classic Italian variety. While maintaining barbera's signature raspberry-like acidity and blue fruit character, the cooler Yarra Valley climate allows for more complex development of savoury notes like tobacco and leather. The medium-bodied structure and long finish demonstrate how this variety thrives in Australia's premium cool-climate regions, creating wines that honour tradition while expressing unique regional character.

The 95-point Halliday rating reflects this barbera's exceptional balance and complexity that evolves beautifully in the glass. Starting with classic blue fruits and spice, it develops into darker, more sophisticated flavours of tobacco, leather and allspice. The long, acid-driven finish with warming spice and subtle tannins demonstrates the wine's structural integrity and ageing potential - hallmarks of truly outstanding barbera that justify such high recognition.

This barbera presents a delightful dilemma - it's absolutely delicious now with its vibrant fruit and spice profile, yet has the structure to reward patience. The wine's acid-driven backbone and emerging savoury complexity suggest it will develop beautifully over 5 years, gaining more tertiary flavours while maintaining its characteristic freshness. Consider buying multiple bottles to enjoy both its youthful exuberance and mature sophistication.

The medium-bodied structure and bright acidity make this barbera incredibly food-friendly, particularly with rich, savoury dishes. The raspberry-like acidity cuts through fatty meats like duck or lamb, while the developing tobacco and leather notes complement aged cheeses and charcuterie. Traditional Italian pairings like ragu or osso buco work beautifully, but don't overlook modern Australian cuisine - think slow-cooked beef cheeks or mushroom risotto.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for barbera to develop both power and elegance. The region's temperature variations allow the variety to retain its characteristic bright acidity while developing complex savoury notes that emerge as the wine opens. This terroir influence explains why the wine transforms so dramatically in the glass, moving from primary fruit flavours to sophisticated secondary characters of spice and earth.
