Why do we love this wine?

The Barossa Valley is home to quite a few multi-generational wine families. There are legacies as far as the eye can see, stretching across the Barossa plains and rooted as deep as the oldest vineyards. The Aulds are one such family, with the current generation Sam and Jock paying tribute to their lineage who were planting Australian vineyards in the mid 1800's. Each sip tells a story—of sun-soaked vineyards, family traditions, and a relentless pursuit of quality. After the first taste of Ernie shiraz you won't be looking back.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Ernie is sourced from a single vineyard, which means all grapes come from one specific plot of land rather than being blended from multiple sites. This single-vineyard approach captures the unique terroir characteristics of that particular location, resulting in a more focused and distinctive expression of Barossa Shiraz. The Auld family's multi-generational expertise, dating back to the mid-1800s, ensures meticulous vineyard management that maximises the site's potential.

These savoury characteristics are hallmarks of premium Barossa Shiraz, particularly from older vines and well-established vineyards. The meaty notes develop through extended skin contact during fermentation and often indicate the presence of compounds called pyrazines, which add complexity. Black olive flavours typically emerge from the interaction between the grape's natural tannins and the Barossa's warm climate, creating these distinctive umami-rich characteristics that make the wine perfect for pairing with grilled meats and hearty dishes.

A 95-point rating from Wine Orbit places this wine in exceptional territory, indicating outstanding quality that's recognised by professional critics. Wine Orbit is a respected Australian wine publication, and scores above 90 points represent wines of superior character and complexity. This rating, combined with their Five Stars designation, suggests The Ernie delivers exceptional value and quality that punches well above its weight class in the competitive Barossa Shiraz market.

Full-bodied indicates this wine has substantial weight, richness, and intensity on the palate, with higher alcohol content and concentrated flavours. This style is characteristic of warm-climate Shiraz like those from Barossa, where the grapes achieve full ripeness and develop deep colour and robust tannin structure. The full body means it will coat your mouth with rich fruit flavours and have enough structure to age gracefully, developing additional complexity over the next 5-10 years.

The 2022 vintage is highlighted as a 'Killer Vintage' in the ratings, indicating exceptional growing conditions that year. Cool, wet winters followed by warm, dry summers typically create ideal conditions for Shiraz in Barossa, allowing for slow, even ripening that concentrates flavours while maintaining natural acidity. The combination of the Auld family's expertise and this outstanding vintage has resulted in a wine that captures the best of what Barossa Shiraz can offer.
