Why do we love this wine?

The Ashton Hills Picadilly Valley pinot noir finds a way to be both graceful and punchy in one sip - a bit of a ‘firm hand in a velvet glove’ type situation. A swirl of ripe berry fruits and plush vanilla. Wet earth and brittle leaf. Charred cedar. Some whole bunch fermentation gives it a slippery, lithe, and glossy mouthfeel but the ripeness and depth of the fruit profile makes it full and complete. Fine grain tannins prickle the palate. The sheer amount of what’s going on in the glass speaks to the quality of the winemaking at play here. This would be an excellent candidate should you wish to sway someone from the ‘never-pinot’ crowd. But then, why would you? More for us, right?

Review

Halliday Wine Companion

Fermented with 30% whole bunches, matured in French oak for 9 months. In the dark and brooding class of pinot, with undergrowth, autumnal leaves, dark berries, woodsy spices and sage. The amount of whole bunches has been decreased from 2020, a good sign, bringing an element of added complexity rather than sharpness. A strong, firm, exciting young pinot.
