"This is why red wine is cellared" - Campbell Mattinson. Let's not beat around the bush, this is a big shiraz, even by McLaren Vale's standards. Years of careful cellaring has brought a smoothness and silkiness to this wine, whilst not stifling the natural grunt and gutsiness of this gorgeous drop. Aged shiraz, done very, very, very well.

Why do we love this wine?

A few years on and absolutely strutting its stuff. As Mattinson noted, this is exactly why we cellar red wine. It’s all come together beautifully - rich notes of coffee, blackberry, leather and earthiness meet sweet spice, hints of liquorice, and a long list of other subtleties. The palate’s smooth, layered and complete, framed by fine, resolved tannins that still hold the structure beautifully. All the promise it showed in its youth? Fully delivered. This is a mature stunner, right in the sweet spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine perfectly demonstrates why cellaring premium Shiraz is worthwhile. The 2018 vintage has reached its sweet spot, where the initial fruit power has evolved into complex layers of coffee, blackberry, leather and earthiness. The tannins have softened and integrated beautifully, creating the smooth, complete palate that only comes with proper bottle maturation.

McLaren Vale's warm Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for full-bodied Shiraz with intense fruit concentration. The region's proximity to the ocean provides cooling influences that help retain acidity, while the ancient geological formations contribute to the wine's distinctive earthy undertones and mineral complexity that complement the rich berry flavours.

The wine's rich, layered profile and resolved tannins make it perfect for hearty dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef steaks, or game meats. The coffee and liquorice notes also complement dishes with earthy elements like mushroom risotto or grilled vegetables with herbs. The wine's maturity means it can handle bold flavours without being overwhelmed.

The dual 95-point ratings from Campbell Mattinson and Wine Pilot reflect the wine's exceptional balance and successful evolution from a promising young wine into a mature masterpiece. Critics particularly noted how all the wine's elements have integrated harmoniously, with the structure remaining intact while developing remarkable complexity and finesse that exemplifies premium Australian Shiraz at its peak.

While currently in its sweet spot, quality McLaren Vale Shiraz like this can continue evolving for several more years. The fine, resolved tannins provide excellent structure for further development, though the wine is drinking beautifully now. Proper cellaring conditions will allow the earthy and spice elements to become even more pronounced while maintaining the wine's elegant balance.
