When we heard 5th generation McLaren Vale legends, Angove, were turning their hand to Barossa shiraz, we sat up and took notice. When we actually tasted the thing, we nearly fell off our chairs. Deep, dark, dense, delicious. This is a complete steal.

Why do we love this wine?

This wine was crafted using traditional techniques at the historic, century-old Angove winery. After gentle de-stemming, wild fermentation was embraced in open fermenters to let the site’s character shine. Twice-daily hand plunging and pump-overs built colour, structure and complexity. Once dry, the wine was basket-pressed and sent to French oak for a long, slow maturation. Blackberry compote, aniseed and crushed herbs leap from the glass, supported by overt cedar and warming spice. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with a velvety texture that weaves dark plum, mocha and savoury oak into a seamless whole. Bright acidity and fine tannins stretch the finish long and clean. This is Barossa done beautifully. Drink now - it'll last for 10 years in the cellar but just drink it, it's so good right now.

Wine Orbit

"Richly fruited with enticing complexity, the wine shows blackberry, olive, clove, and cedar characters on the nose. The palate delivers terrific weight and plump mouthfeel, splendidly supported by silky texture and supple tannins, making it bold and robust with a lengthy, delectable finish. At its best: now to 2033." - Wine Orbit

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the traditional Barossa approach with wild fermentation in open fermenters, allowing indigenous yeasts to express the vineyard's unique terroir. The combination of hand plunging, pump-overs, and French oak maturation creates exceptional complexity that distinguishes it from mass-produced Shiraz. The Barossa Valley's warm climate and ancient soils contribute to the wine's characteristic richness and spice, while Angove's century-old winemaking heritage ensures authentic regional expression.

While this wine will develop beautifully over 10 years in proper cellar conditions, it's crafted to be immediately enjoyable and drinking superbly right now. The winemaker's recommendation is to drink it sooner rather than later to appreciate its vibrant fruit character and seamless integration. If you do choose to cellar it, the wine will evolve towards more savoury, earthy characteristics as the primary fruit flavours integrate further with the oak and tannin structure.

The wine's rich, velvety texture and dark fruit profile make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked braised meats. The mocha and cedar notes complement dishes with earthy mushrooms or herbs, while the bright acidity cuts through rich, fatty foods beautifully. Consider pairing with aged hard cheeses, barbecued meats with smoky flavours, or even dark chocolate desserts to echo the wine's natural chocolate undertones.

The consistent 90-point scores across Wine Orbit, Killer Vintage, and Dangerous Value reflect the wine's exceptional quality-to-price ratio and masterful winemaking. Critics recognise the seamless integration of traditional techniques with modern precision, creating a wine that authentically represents Barossa terroir. The 'Dangerous Value' rating particularly highlights how this wine delivers premium quality typically found in much more expensive bottles, making it a standout in the competitive Barossa Shiraz category.

Wild fermentation uses naturally occurring yeasts from the vineyard and winery environment rather than commercial cultured yeasts, allowing the wine to develop more complex, site-specific characteristics. This traditional technique often produces more interesting aromatics and textural complexity, contributing to the wine's distinctive blackberry, aniseed, and herb notes. The process is less predictable but rewards skilled winemakers like Angove with wines that truly express their vineyard's unique personality and the vintage conditions.
