All the things we love about the region; all the power and guts of a proper Aussie shiraz with vibrant fruit and a peppy natural acidity. The best of both worlds, elegant yet bold, with a hint of toasty oak and gentle, silky tannins.

Why do we love this wine?

Amicus is Latin for 'friend', "We wouldn’t open a bad bottle of wine to share with our loved ones and we don’t want you to, either.", that's this producer's mantra and pretty much their whole philosophy, and it's no better embodied than in this little number. A bottle made to be shared. Rich and robust with lively acid and plush, textured fruit, the layered tannin structure brings an element of elegance and allows for a surprisingly long drinking window (now to 2036). The already famous 2021 McLaren Vale vintage, much like this wine, is a gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving.

Gorgeously styled and expressed, showing dark fruit intensity, game, clove, dark chocolate and toasty oak aromas, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate offering plush texture backed by layers of silky tannins, making it sturdy and supple simultaneously. Richly flavoursome and delicious. At its best: now to 2036.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2021 McLaren Vale vintage is already gaining legendary status among wine enthusiasts, often described as a 'gift that keeps on giving'. This exceptional year produced wines with remarkable concentration and balance, where the region's warm climate and diverse soils created ideal conditions for Shiraz. The vintage showcases McLaren Vale's ability to produce wines that are both immediately approachable and capable of long-term cellaring, with this Amicus displaying the perfect marriage of power and elegance that defines great McLaren Vale Shiraz.

This Amicus Shiraz offers remarkable versatility with a drinking window extending from now until 2036 - that's a 15-year cellaring potential. The wine's layered tannin structure provides the backbone for extended ageing, while its lively acidity ensures it remains fresh over time. You can enjoy it immediately for its vibrant fruit expression, or cellar it to develop more complex secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy notes that emerge as the wine matures.

The rich blood plum and chocolate flavours, combined with the wine's full-bodied nature, make it an excellent match for hearty dishes. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's robust character can stand up to intense flavours. The plush fruit and structured tannins also complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the chocolate notes create surprising harmony with dark chocolate desserts or even spiced dishes with warming herbs.

A 95-point rating from Wine Orbit places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that stands well above average releases. Wine Orbit's additional 'Five Stars' and 'Killer Vintage' designations reinforce that this isn't just a good wine, but represents outstanding value and craftsmanship. Such high scores typically indicate a wine that perfectly expresses its varietal character and regional terroir, with complexity that will reward both immediate consumption and patient cellaring.

Amicus is Latin for 'friend', and this name perfectly captures the producer's core philosophy of creating wines worthy of sharing with loved ones. The winemaker's commitment to never releasing a wine they wouldn't proudly serve to friends ensures every bottle meets exacting standards. This philosophy translates into careful vineyard selection, thoughtful winemaking techniques, and a focus on creating wines that bring people together - exactly what great wine should do.
