Adega Mãe are based north of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon and produce wines that punch well above their price point, with classic ripe fruit that you’d expect from Portuguese red blends balanced with a vibrant and fresh minerality.

Why do we love this wine?

This red blend leads with touriga franca (a critical grape varietal that you might know from its place in producing port) complimented by our good friend cabernet sauvignon. Together, they are a power couple of florality, tannin, structural acid and a whole heap of yummy black berry fruits. Then, go for 10 months in French oak and you’ve got something way more serious than you’re paying for. It’s all about Portugal, baby!

A striking balance of fruity and fresh, I was at once captivated by this wine. Portuguese wines vary widely in style, but they all have exactly that in common: style. Not often you get a dense, full-bodied red that makes you feel like you're sitting beachside in your bathers. A little chill on this would not go unwelcome, to open up those blackcurrant, black cherry characters tenfold

Wine nerd stuff

It's cool, we get it, you want to know absolutely everything about this wine. Well here you go, go nuts.

Touriga Franca, Cabernet Sauvignon

Frequently Asked Questions

Touriga Franca is Portugal's secret weapon - traditionally used in port production, it brings incredible floral aromatics and structured tannins that most wine drinkers rarely experience in table wines. When blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, it creates a unique Portuguese-Australian fusion that showcases the grape's versatility beyond fortified wines. This combination delivers the power and blackberry intensity you'd expect from Cabernet, elevated by Touriga Franca's distinctive perfumed character and natural acidity.

French oak adds layers of complexity without overwhelming the fruit, contributing subtle vanilla and spice notes that integrate beautifully with the wine's natural blackcurrant flavours. The extended maturation period allows the tannins to soften and marry with the oak, creating a more refined structure than typical young red blends. This oak treatment elevates what could be a simple fruit-forward wine into something with genuine cellar potential and sophisticated drinking appeal.

The Lisbon region benefits from Atlantic maritime influence, which moderates temperatures and extends the growing season - crucial for achieving full phenolic ripeness in both international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and native grapes like Touriga Franca. This coastal proximity creates ideal conditions for producing structured, age-worthy reds with balanced acidity. The region's diverse soils and microclimates allow winemakers to craft distinctive blends that showcase both Portuguese tradition and international appeal.

The wine's rich tannin structure and spice notes make it perfect for grilled meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with Portuguese-style marinades featuring paprika and garlic. The blackcurrant intensity can stand up to aged cheeses like Serra da Estrela or mature cheddar, while the floral Touriga Franca component complements herb-crusted dishes beautifully. Consider pairing with Portuguese classics like bifana or cozido, where the wine's structure won't be overwhelmed by bold, rustic flavours.

This wine punches well above its weight class by combining premium winemaking techniques - 10 months French oak maturation and careful varietal selection - with Portugal's exceptional value proposition. Most Cabernet blends at this price point use American oak or shorter maturation periods, while this wine's use of Touriga Franca adds a point of difference you simply can't find in conventional Australian or international blends. The 90-point staff rating confirms this represents serious wine at an accessible price point.
