When Robert Parker calls someone "one of planet earth's greatest winemakers", you know the bloke's doing something right. It's true, Roman Bratasiuk, and his label Clarendon Hills, are doing PLENTY right. This truly is one of Australia's great wines, and as we've proven in the past, this will drink beautifully for a couple of decades. Easy.

Why do we love this wine?

This comes from the south-western corner of Blewitt Springs, where the sandy soils deliver medium-to-full-weighted shiraz with serious personality. You're getting floral aromatics mixed with savoury complexity - cured meat, leather and roasted game notes subtly supporting stunning dark plum fruit. The texture's silky and inviting, which means it's already drinking beautifully young. But there's structure here too - enough to cellar for years if you want to see those earthy, truffled characters develop. The 2022 vintage is showing layers of black olive, charcuterie and earthy depth right now, with tannins that feel silky rather than grippy. It's approachable without being simple, complex without being heavy. WARNING: you will NOT be able to keep your hands off this one in the cellar - might have to get a mate to hang onto it for a decade or two?

Frequently Asked Questions

The sandy soils of Blewitt Springs, particularly in the south-western corner where Liandra is sourced, create a unique microclimate that produces Shiraz with exceptional elegance and complexity. These free-draining soils stress the vines just enough to concentrate flavours while maintaining natural acidity, resulting in wines that balance power with finesse. The maritime influence from nearby Gulf St Vincent also helps preserve the delicate floral aromatics that make this region's Shiraz so distinctive from other McLaren Vale sub-regions.

While the 2023 Liandra is already drinking beautifully with its silky texture and approachable tannins, it has the structure to develop magnificently over 10-15 years. The wine will gradually evolve from its current dark plum fruit focus towards more complex earthy, truffle and leather characteristics. If you're patient enough to cellar it for a decade or two, you'll be rewarded with the full expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz terroir - though the temptation to drink it young is understandably strong given its immediate appeal.

The wine's savoury complexity of cured meat, leather and roasted game notes makes it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes like slow-cooked lamb shoulder, aged beef steaks, or wild game. The silky tannins won't overpower dishes with earthy elements like mushroom risotto or truffle pasta, while the dark plum fruit provides enough richness to complement strong cheeses. The wine's balanced structure also makes it excellent with barbecued meats, where the smoky flavours will echo the wine's roasted characteristics.

Both James Halliday and Wine Advocate recognised the exceptional quality of this vintage, particularly praising the wine's ability to combine immediate drinkability with serious cellaring potential. The dual 95-point scores reflect the wine's perfect balance of McLaren Vale power with elegant restraint, showcasing textbook Blewitt Springs characteristics. These ratings acknowledge not just the wine's current appeal, but its potential to develop into something truly special over time, representing exceptional value for a wine of this calibre.

While the description references the 2022 vintage showing more developed earthy, charcuterie and black olive characters, the 2023 is currently expressing more primary fruit with its stunning dark plum focus and floral aromatics. This suggests 2023 was a vintage that allowed for excellent fruit retention while still developing the complex savoury undertones that define great McLaren Vale Shiraz. The 2023 appears to have the same silky tannin structure as the acclaimed 2022, indicating consistent winemaking excellence across vintages.
