Why do we love this wine?

Assuredly among the most decorated producers of the Barossa Valley. St Hallets produce absolute classics vintage after vintage. This is no exception. This is regionally perfect; a wine that is so well bound, so perfectly in balance, that it's found harmony in its relative youth and will strive confidently into the next decade. The American oak is present on the palate giving a lusciousness to the mouthfeel that marries so well with the prominence of the fruit. If you're wondering what ultra-premium fruit can look like in the hands of Australia's best producers... well, it looks a lot like this.

James Halliday

Super-deep crimson in the glass with inviting aromas of macerated plum, blackberry, boysenberry and blueberry fruits. Hints of fruit cake spice, licorice, dark chocolate, turned earth, violets, olive tapenade, vanillin oak panforte and roasting meats. It's a classic Barossan style and one that St Hallett does very well, consistently dealing out great examples of what made the region famous across the world. Plush and endearing with superfine powdery tannins and a black-fruited finish that lingers nicely, showing abundant spice and meaty, earthy nuance. You can see why these wines are so well supported, especially so from a vintage as strong as 2021.

Frequently Asked Questions

The St Hallett Blackwell represents the pinnacle of Barossa winemaking, showcasing how ultra-premium fruit transforms in the hands of Australia's most decorated producers. Its exceptional balance between American oak integration and fruit prominence creates a wine that achieves harmony in its youth while promising confident evolution over the next decade. The dual 95-point ratings from James Halliday and The Real Review confirm its status as a benchmark expression of regional terroir.

American oak plays a crucial supporting role rather than dominating the wine's profile, adding lusciousness to the mouthfeel that perfectly complements the fruit's natural prominence. This careful oak integration is a hallmark of St Hallett's winemaking philosophy, where the wood enhances rather than masks the Barossa Valley's distinctive Shiraz characteristics. The result is a full-bodied wine with added complexity and textural richness that will integrate further as the wine matures.

The wine's rich blackberry and chocolate notes, combined with warming spice elements, make it ideal for hearty red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef roasts, or barbecued steaks. The full-bodied palate weight and American oak influence also complement aged cheeses, particularly strong cheddars or blue varieties. For a regional pairing, consider traditional Barossa fare like slow-cooked beef with root vegetables, which echoes the wine's earthy complexity.

This Blackwell Shiraz demonstrates remarkable versatility, having achieved beautiful harmony in its relative youth that makes it thoroughly enjoyable now. However, its impeccable balance and structure suggest it will develop additional complexity and refinement over the next decade. Wine enthusiasts can enjoy it immediately for its vibrant fruit expression, or cellar it to experience how the American oak and tannins will integrate further, revealing more nuanced secondary characteristics.

The dual 95-point scores reflect the wine's exceptional execution across all quality parameters - from fruit selection and winemaking technique to regional expression and ageing potential. Critics recognise St Hallett's consistent ability to produce 'absolute classics vintage after vintage', with this 2021 Blackwell exemplifying their mastery of Barossa Shiraz. The wine's perfect binding and balance, combined with its representation of ultra-premium fruit handling, positions it among Australia's finest regional expressions.
