Pirramimma might well be the most popular producer to ever grace Vinomofo with their amazing wines. This'll show you why. Very smooth, very silky, very fancy.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

A bold and rich expression of McLaren Vale, even for this mob. 2021 proves itself, again, to be one of the all-time MV vintages. Lush blood plums and black liquorice with well integrated, cedar-like oak and a cleverly interwoven tannin structure that will endure for many years to come. Although drinking wonderfully now, this wine will absolutely go the distance showing fantastic acid, fruit, tannin and oak. You can try to see how far it'll go if you like, but with a wine this tasty, we'd bet the farm that it'll outlast your patience.

Ken Gargett

"Another example of the superb 2021 vintage, for this, the team’s flagship red. The name comes from 1633, when Charles 1st brought Lord James Johnston forth as Earl of Hartfell. He was later promoted to Earl of Annandale, though why that is a superior position is something you’ll have to enquire of a historian (or perhaps the good folk of Annandale) for the answer. The wine is indeed fit for royalty (are Earls royalty or just aristocracy?). An opaque maroon, there is still a fair amount of oak evident here, but it is in the process of integration and all is going very well. There are notes of cassis, mocha, vanilla, black fruits, chocolate, coffee beans, bay leaves and black cherries. There are even slight hints of animal flesh, adding to the complexity. Seamless and supple, the wine has a gorgeous creamy texture. This is a classic McLaren Vale Shiraz and a really good one. Silky tannins and great length round things out. Fifteen to twenty years if you have the patience. 97." - Ken Gargett

" A glorious statement of a great vintage. Power, poise and purpose define a wonderfully crafted shiraz. Pounces with energy revealing black cherry, dark plum and a little spice on the nose. The palate is pure elegance, but at the same time, there is deep and penetrating intensity. A wine that will happily handle extended cellaring but it has such precise balance now that it’s a beautiful current drink. Score: 96/100 Cellar: 20 years." - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2021 vintage is being hailed as one of the all-time great McLaren Vale vintages, delivering exceptional concentration and balance. This vintage produced wines with remarkable depth of fruit, well-integrated tannins, and the perfect acid structure needed for long-term cellaring. The Earl showcases these vintage characteristics beautifully, with its lush blood plum flavours and cedar-like oak integration that defines premium McLaren Vale Shiraz.

While The Earl is drinking wonderfully now with its rich, accessible fruit profile, it's built for the long haul with fantastic acid, fruit, tannin and oak balance. The cleverly interwoven tannin structure suggests this wine will develop beautifully over many years, likely reaching peak maturity in 8-12 years. However, given how delicious it is in its youth, many wine lovers find it hard to resist opening bottles early rather than waiting for full maturity.

The Earl's bold blood plum and black liquorice flavours, combined with cedar-like oak, make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steak, or hearty beef stews that can match the wine's full-bodied intensity. The black olive notes also complement Mediterranean-style dishes with herbs and olives, while the wine's structure can handle strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese.

Ken Gargett's 97-point score places The Earl in exceptional company, indicating a wine of outstanding quality and complexity. Such high ratings from respected critics like Gargett and Ray Jordan (96 points) suggest this Shiraz demonstrates textbook McLaren Vale characteristics while offering something special beyond the norm. These scores often reflect not just immediate drinking pleasure, but also the wine's potential for graceful ageing and development over time.

Pirramimma's approach to The Earl demonstrates their mastery of McLaren Vale Shiraz, particularly in oak integration and tannin management. The cedar-like oak is well-integrated rather than overwhelming, allowing the blood plum and black liquorice fruit to shine while adding complexity. Their clever tannin weaving creates structure for ageing without making the wine harsh in youth, reflecting decades of experience in crafting wines that balance immediate appeal with long-term potential.
