Why do we love this wine?

The Pertaringa name is no stranger to the Aussie household. The iconic Hardy family are to wine what vegemite is to toast: a perfect match. So, to land this beauty from the hands of Bec Hardy is monumental for us, and we couldn't be more pleased. This is McLaren Shiraz through and through, with densely packed dark chocolate and fresh roasted coffee exploding on the nose. The palate follows through just as true, layered with preserved plums, dark forest berries and a lick of vanillin softness. There's one word for this wine, and it's awesome.

A fine McLaren Vale Shiraz from an excellent vintage, this is a deep bold red in colour. There is some real sappiness here. We have notes of plums, cigar boxes, dried herbs and fresh raspberries. The wine is of medium length and offers gentle, cushiony tannins with a fine line of acidity. It is nicely balanced and with good drive. Delicious notes of chocolate and mocha emerge on the palate, when the wine is given a little time. There is good drive throughout. Will provide attractive drinking for at least the next six to eight years.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz showcases the distinctive terroir of McLaren Vale through its intense concentration of dark chocolate and coffee aromatics, combined with preserved plum and forest berry flavours. The 95-point Wine Showcase rating reflects the exceptional 2022 vintage conditions that allowed for optimal flavour development. McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils create the perfect environment for Shiraz to develop these complex, full-bodied characteristics that define premium Australian red wine.

Bec Hardy represents the fifth generation of the legendary Hardy wine family, one of Australia's most respected winemaking dynasties spanning over 160 years. Her expertise combines traditional family knowledge with modern winemaking techniques, ensuring each vintage maintains the Hardy reputation for excellence. The Hardy family's deep understanding of South Australian terroir, particularly in regions like McLaren Vale, allows them to craft wines that truly express the unique character of their vineyard sites.

The rich chocolate and coffee notes, combined with dark berry flavours, make this Shiraz an ideal match for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts. The wine's full-bodied structure and vanillin softness also complement aged cheeses, mushroom-based dishes, and even dark chocolate desserts. The preserved plum characteristics work beautifully with game meats and hearty winter stews, while the wine's intensity can stand up to bold, spicy cuisines.

Serve this Shiraz at 16-18°C to allow the complex aromatics of dark chocolate and coffee to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will help soften the tannins and enhance the preserved plum and berry flavours. While delicious now, this wine has the structure to cellar for 8-12 years, during which the vanillin oak will integrate further and the fruit flavours will develop greater complexity and tertiary characteristics.

The 'Belonging to the Hills' name reflects the deep connection between the Hardy family and the undulating landscape of McLaren Vale, where elevated vineyard sites benefit from cooling breezes and diverse soil types. This terroir-driven approach means the grapes develop intense flavour concentration while maintaining natural acidity. The hills provide optimal drainage and sun exposure, contributing to the wine's distinctive character of dark forest berries and chocolate notes that define premium McLaren Vale Shiraz.
