Margaret River reds ain't all about cabernet. Increasingly shiraz is making a claim on the region. That's not to say cabernet is going anywhere, mind you, but they may need to make a little room on the podium.

Why do we love this wine?

Bright and focused aromatics mark the immediate freshness and exuberance of this wine. The aromatic profile is firmly in the 'dark and brooding' slot; mulberries, fresh blueberries, and blood plums lead out. On the palate the focus continues; deep, driving fruits from go the whoa . The combination of fresh aromatic lift coupled with powerful fruit makes this a perfect wine pairing for savoury pastries. Cedar, pepper, some chilli spice ride a bit of silky, fine tannin structure through at the finish.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Margaret River's maritime climate creates a unique expression of Shiraz that's more elegant and structured than the powerful styles from Barossa or McLaren Vale. The ocean influence moderates temperatures, allowing for extended ripening periods that develop complex aromatics while maintaining natural acidity. This results in the wine's distinctive combination of 'bright and focused aromatics' with deep fruit concentration, showcasing Margaret River's ability to produce Shiraz with both power and finesse.

The 'dark and brooding' character comes from the specific fruit profile of mulberries, blueberries, and blood plums - all deeply pigmented, intense fruits that indicate optimal ripeness and concentration. This aromatic signature is typical of premium Shiraz where extended hang time on the vine develops complex phenolic compounds. The cedar and pepper notes add further complexity, creating a wine that reveals layers of aroma rather than simple, upfront fruitiness.

The wine's combination of powerful fruit and silky tannins makes it ideal for rich, savoury dishes that can match its intensity. The description specifically mentions savoury pastries, which work because the wine's fresh aromatic lift cuts through rich, buttery textures while the deep fruit complements umami flavours. Consider pairing with beef Wellington, mushroom tarts, or char-grilled lamb with herbs - dishes where the wine's cedar and pepper notes can echo complementary flavours.

The 'silky, fine tannin structure' indicates this Shiraz has been crafted for both immediate enjoyment and aging potential. Fine tannins provide texture without overwhelming astringency, allowing the fruit flavours to shine while adding complexity to the finish. This tannin quality is often achieved through careful extraction techniques and possibly some oak aging, creating a wine that feels substantial in the mouth without being harsh or drying.

A 90-point rating from a boutique producer indicates exceptional quality from a smaller-scale operation focused on premium winemaking rather than volume production. Boutique producers typically have greater control over vineyard management and winemaking decisions, often resulting in more distinctive, terroir-driven wines. The single vineyard designation further emphasises this wine's provenance and quality, suggesting grapes sourced from one exceptional site that fully expresses Margaret River's unique characteristics.
