Why do we love this case?
*Of course* we love all our wine babies equally. But some are just particularly enchanting. It was a difficult job to narrow it down to just 6 wines. There was vigorous debate, fierce arguments for our favourite wines, but after the dust settled and amends were made, we landed on a case that is unanimously and completely exciting. Each have their own reasons, each completely unique wines. A little insight into us, your wine buyers. These are the wines we’re drinking at home after the day’s work is done.
1x Tabali Talinay Pinot Noir 2019
Red — Pinot Noir
Chile — Chile
Here's a tidbit of under-the-radar insider info - Chile is producing incredible pinot noir that belongs in the conversation with some of the best in the world. And amongst that upper echelon of Chilean pinots are those from Tabalí's tiny Talinay vineyard. It sits only 12km from the Pacific Ocean in a remote area adjacent to Fray Jorge National Park. The soil is fractured limestone with calcium carbonate, providing exceptional drainage and imparting chalky minerality in the wine. Hand-harvested fruit is 65% destemmed and 35% whole cluster fermented. One full year in top-notch French oak rounds out the process ahead of bottling. The wine is vivid in colour, complex, fresh and bright. You’ll find stoney notes, red fruits, earthiness, and a creamy texture. This is exceptional pinot that won't require you to remortgage your home (hello Burgundy).
You’d pay $70 full price.

1x Bodegas Baigorri Crianza 2018
Red — Tempranillo
Rioja DOC — Spain
There's a picture that comes to mind for most familiar with the wines of Rioja: oak-bombed tempranillo. While that's not off the mark, it's a pretty one-dimensional picture of a diverse region. That's the story that Bodegas Baigorri tell so well, breathing life and generosity into their wines that pay homage to tradition in a contemporary way. Drive through the stunning landscape of Rioja's West, up the meandering trail of the Ebro River, and against the towering mountain ranges of the North you'll find Baigorri. The extra elevation adds to the brightness of their wines (read: added age-ability) and profound depth of flavour. This is the wine to change your perspective on Rioja, and it's only just coming into it's best drinking window. Enjoy for a long, long time to come.
You’d pay $75 full price.

1x Carobbio Chianti Classico Reserva DOCG 2015
Red — Sangiovese
Tuscany — Italy
I remember the first red wine I ever enjoyed: it was a bottle of Chianti over dinner with my family. Suddenly, this red wine thing made sense. You could say that I've since had a sentimental fondness for these wines, but I think it's more accurate to say that the calibre of these wines holds steady amongst the greatest of the world. Carobbio, of course, hold that torch proudly. What is great about the wines of Chianti is the way they show off the sangiovese variety with all it's unique edges: dried herbs and sour cherries meet clay and tomato leaf. Being Reserva level, this sees an extra 'oomph' of oak, which is showing in a glorious leather and tobacco way. This might be 8 years old, but it's still a baby given how much life it has left to live. Enjoy as the Italians would insist: with great food and the best people.
You’d pay $89 full price.

1x El Enemigo Chardonnay 2020
White — Chardonnay
Mendoza — Argentina
El Enemigo might just be the most compelling producer in Mendoza today. It's the brainchild of Alejandro Vigil, head winemaker for Catena, and Aleanna Catena, daughter of Nicolas Catena. They focus on cabernet franc in their reds (with world renown), but their chardonnay is truly the game changer. James Suckling has been a huge fan since the first vintage, giving it massive scores and a regular spot in his annual Top 100 Wines list. It's an almost unique style of chardy, but there’s no shortage of classic flavours. You’ll get all the fresh citrus, green and yellow apples and white peach you could wish for. But this also sees flor ageing in barrel, not unlike sherry. And that’s where the magic happens. The fruit is enhanced with complex yeasty notes, vanillin-sweet oak and nutty-savoury undertones. It’s richly flavoured, but perfectly balanced at the same time. An all-time Mofo staff favourite wine that always delivers in spades.
You’d pay $60 full price.

1x Derwent Estate Deviance Riesling 2019
White — Riesling
Tasmania — Australia
Complex and textural riesling from the Apple Isle. This small-scale passion project of Tassie icon Derwent Estate is brand new to the ‘Fo. Safe to say, we’re stoked to get our hands on it. Juicy, pithy lime gives depth and breadth to the palate, and developed whole lemon drives the fruit profile. A musky, petroleum nuance reveals itself in the glass. We won’t judge you if instant gratification is your thing, but this beauty will keep developing in complexity for years to come.
You’d pay $29 full price.

1x The Story Syrah 2018
Red — Shiraz
Grampians — Australia
I'm thrilled by the emergence of 'Syrah' on Aussie wine labels, where we were once a winemaking nation that worshipped only at the altar of big. bold 'Shiraz.' Don't get me wrong, I like those wines too – but what is it they say about variety being the spice of life? The Story is a wine grounded in nuance and complexity, borrowing more from the Northern Rhone that its compatriots in the Barossa Valley. Beautifully spiced and peppery - more and more of the wine reveals itself as you work it in the glass and allow it to breath in a little O2. There's chocolatey richness, nuttiness, and a little bit of tree bark, too. At the forefront, though, and playing a leading role from curtain-to-curtain, is the bright, blue-fruited core of the wine. And it can sing. It can dance. It can act. A delightfully nuanced iteration of Australia's foremost varietal.
You’d pay $30 full price.
