Why do we love this case?

If there’s one variety we never get tired of tasting, it’s Shiraz. For the Staff Picks - Shiraz Edition, we’ve raided the favourites list and pulled together a seriously impressive collection showcasing just how good Aussie Shiraz can be.

There’s Powell & Son, Greenock Creek and Yelland & Papps bringing serious Barossa pedigree, Mitolo and Hardy’s Tintara flying the flag for McLaren Vale, and a beautifully aged Dalwhinnie Moonambel adding a distinctly Victorian expression to the mix.

Big names, brilliant regions and plenty of Shiraz personality — consider this one staff approved.

1x Greenock Creek Fifteen Claims Shiraz 2021

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

1,000 bottles. That's all that was ever made. That's the entire world supply. From a highly-exclusive vineyard, in the highly-exclusive sub-region of Mopa, in one of the best Barossa years ever. This is the best of the best - in devastatingly small quantities. A pick-up to be proud of! Opaque blood red in the glass, with a nose that stops you completely. Vanilla, blueberry, chocolate, mocha, coffee bean, aniseed and dark plum all layered together in something that feels almost impossibly complex and perfectly composed at the same time. The palate is focused and immaculately balanced - intensity maintained from the very first sip all the way through to a finish of extraordinary length, underpinned by the silkiest tannins you'll find on a Barossa Shiraz at any price.

You'd pay $120 full price.

1x Powell & Son Marananga Ironstone Shiraz 2023

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

You know Powell & Son. Their Barossa Shiraz 'The Blend', is the most popular we've ever sold - and if you've had it, you already understand why Dave Powell has one of the most respected names in Australian wine. This is a different conversation entirely. The Marananga Ironstone is where Powell & Son shift into another gear completely. We're going right to the top-shelf with this one! That classic Powell philosophy - traditional techniques, old concrete fermenters, basket pressing, minimal intervention - but applied to one of the most prized vineyard sites in the entire Barossa. The kind of fruit that makes even experienced winemakers stop and take notice. The result is Barossa Shiraz of extraordinary depth and presence. Dark plum, black cherry and blackberry at the core, with a richness and concentration that fills every corner of the palate and a svelte, mouth-coating tannin structure that gives it both immediate impact and serious cellaring potential. This is the style that put Australian wine on the world stage - opulent, intense and completely unique.

You'd pay $110 full price.

1x Hardy's Tintara Blewitt Springs Shiraz 2018

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

Tried, tasted, guzzled and enjoyed. Blewitt Springs has been consistently popping out some of the best Shiraz in McLaren Vale for years and this is no exception. Bold and bright but softened with age. The price on this one feels like a glitch, delicious wine. The Blewitt Springs area of McLaren Vale has a pretty good argument for becoming a fully fledged sub-region. Known for exceptional natural acidity and enduring, plush fruit, the sandy soils really lend themselves to a modern expression of McLaren Vale shiraz with an old school twist. Dark fruit, wonderful acid and that classic chocolatey note that you'd expect from a wine that's spent 18 months in French oak barrels. What more could you want from Australia's favourite variety - Shiraz all over.

You'd pay $90 full price.

1x Dalwhinnie Moonambel Shiraz 2017

Red — Shiraz

Pyrenees — Australia

It's hard to justify even writing this tasting note, as it'll all be sold out by them time anyone gets a chance to read it. In any case, the wine: blueberries and black cherries over vanilla, eucalypt, and sweet spice. Liquorice and fruit compote follow neatly, deftly behind the initial fruit burst. Among many things, this wine is further proof of the superiority of the stelvin closure as opposed to cork for ageing cool climate reds. This is wine made with the cellar in mind. It is just now hitting its stride, and what a stride it is. The fruit is remarkably fresh, but no aged characteristics like leather, wet earth and game have been sacrificed whatsoever. The density of the fruit is framed by maturity without being swamped by it, and the wine is able to hold its form through a lasting finish. This is truly a deal to jump at, and one you won't see again.

You'd pay $96 full price.

1x Mitolo G.A.M. Shiraz 2020

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

Year in, year out, this wine knocks our socks off. It could be McLaren Vale etching it's way further and further into our hearts. It could be the fastidious and integrated usage of oak barrels. It could be because we just flat out just love Shiraz. Or, we could love it because you folks love it. And we love being able to share this wine with YOU!

You'd pay $69 full price.

1x Yelland & Papps Stonewell Single Vineyard Shiraz 2024

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

Grown in Stonewell, right in the heart of the Barossa, from a block that's been delivering the goods since 2016, year after year. This is a full colour, full flavour Barossa Shiraz, with a mineral edge running underneath that gives it its own identity rather than just ticking the regional boxes. Violets, black cherry and cracked pepper run through a savoury palate, backed by chalky tannins and an uncommon vibrancy that keeps it all ticking along to a finish that hangs around a lot longer than you'd expect. A bit of wild ferment and a light hand in the winery keep everything focused on what the fruit and the site are actually saying, nothing dressed up, nothing hidden behind sluggish, overdone oak. A pure Barossa wine for Barossa purists.

You'd pay $49 full price.
