1x Eileen Hardy Hardy Shiraz 2021

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

This is the McLaren Vale shiraz that sets the benchmark. The big kahuna. The flagship. From the family so entrenched in the Australian wine landscape that it's hard to see where the vines end and their boots start. When we think of Australian shiraz - we think of this family, we thin of this wine. This isn’t just any shiraz - it’s a masterclass in balance. Sure, it’s full-bodied, deep and brooding, but it wears its power with style. Waves of blackberry, plum and blueberry rolling through, chased by whiffs of coffee grind and a smoky little savoury twist. Seventeen months in French oak has wrapped it all up in sleek texture and supple tannins that glide across the palate like Tom Cruise in 'Risky Business'. It’s rich, it’s refined, it’s ridiculously good. That perfect dance of intensity and precision that McLaren Vale dreams are made of. Every sip unfurls with dark fruit, chocolate, clove and a touch of violet - lush and layered, but never over the top. Seriously special stuff.

You'd pay $160 full price.

1x Ulithorne Avitus Shiraz 2022

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

Small production. Single vineyard. Old vines on sandy Blewitt Springs soils. And a winemaking team who treats every parcel of fruit like it's the most important thing in the world. Because when you drink this wine - you really feel like it's just that; the only thing that matters in the world. Ray Jordan called it "distinctive and classy... excellent wine." James Halliday described it as "suave and sophisticated." Two of Australia's most respected voices arriving at exactly the same conclusion - this is something special. Blackberry, dark plum and cedar on the nose, with spice and a lifted floral complexity that draws you in immediately. The palate is rich and velvety, with dark chocolate, mocha and a refined tannin structure that carries the finish long and clean. Concentrated without being blocky. Elegant without being shy. Single vineyard McLaren Vale shiraz from one of the region's most dedicated small producers. Drinks beautifully now and has years of development ahead. This one's a real treat.

1x Fox Creek Old Vine Shiraz 2022

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

This is no shrinking violet - it’s an unapologetically plush, full-bodied red built to impress the big-shiraz faithful. Think dark fruit liqueur meets espresso and plum sauce, with waves of chocolate, clove, date and anise all rolling in like a flavour parade. It’s rich, velvety and just this side of decadent, but not without brains. There’s iron and bay leaf cutting through, adding a savoury edge that keeps it from tipping into syrupy territory. Then the finish hits - long, dark and insanely deep - leaving you both satisfied and curious for another glass. This is a wine for the loyal McLaren Vale shiraz-heads. The ones who don’t apologise for loving flavour, weight and a bit of drama in their glass. If that’s you, clear some space in the decanter.

1x Hickinbotham Elder Hill Grenache 2016

Red — Grenache

McLaren Vale — Australia

This is one of the finest aged grenaches in the country right now. Full stop. Before grenache became the hottest thing in Australian wine, this winemaker was already doing it better than anyone. While the rest of the country was catching on, he was quietly perfecting it - and 95 points from Halliday is the proof that patience and conviction pay off. Single block. Bush vines planted in 1962. Perched 225 metres above sea level in Clarendon, one of the coolest and most elevated corners of McLaren Vale. This isn't warm-climate, fruit-forward grenache. This is something altogether more serious and more interesting. And the decade of careful maturing has this beauty absolutely singing. The nose is an absolute joy - cherry, blueberry and dried flower aromatics lifted by olive brine, fennel seed, white pepper and a flinty minerality that gives it a complexity and autumnal depth that makes it genuinely hard to stop sniffing. The palate is where it gets serious - ultrafine sandy tannins, plump fruit, earthy minerality and a savoury, meaty generosity that runs through every sip. Dried fig, star anise and Mediterranean herbs weave through a long, drying finish that just keeps revealing itself.

You'd pay $75 full price.

1x Mitolo G.A.M. Shiraz 2020

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

Year in, year out, this wine knocks our socks off. It could be McLaren Vale etching it's way further and further into our hearts. It could be the fastidious and integrated usage of oak barrels. It could be because we just flat out just love Shiraz. Or, we could love it because you folks love it. And we love being able to share this wine with YOU!

1x Geoff Merrill Pimpala Vineyards Shiraz 2017

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

This is single-vineyard shiraz, (personally) barrel selected from the reserve range. Not to be confused with Geoff Merrill’s ‘Pimpala Road’ range, this Pimpala Vineyard shiraz is genuinely on a whole new level. Don't miss out on this, wonderful stuff. This has spent no less than 20 months in French and American oak barrels, plus over three years in the cellar to let all its powerful fruit and decadent oak flavour all meld together. It’s like liquid black chocolate cake, with the Vale’s dark chocolate and heady spice flavours oozing head-on into dark cherry, blackcurrant leaf and roasted coconut. We’re always happy to see Geoff’s wines in the warehouse, and even happier to see them in our glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale is renowned for producing some of Australia's most distinctive Shiraz, thanks to its Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types ranging from sand to clay and ironstone. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing grapes to develop complex flavours while retaining natural acidity. This collection showcases the region's versatility, from the powerful old vine expressions to elegant single vineyard wines that demonstrate why McLaren Vale is considered one of Australia's premier wine regions.

Old vines, typically 30+ years old, produce significantly lower yields but dramatically higher quality fruit with more concentrated flavours and complexity. These mature root systems access deeper soil layers and water sources, creating wines with greater depth and character. The Fox Creek Old Vine Shiraz in this collection represents this philosophy perfectly - older vines naturally self-regulate their crop load, resulting in more intense, structured wines that age beautifully and command premium prices.

Back-vintage wines like the 2017 Geoff Merrill Pimpala Vineyards Shiraz offer a unique opportunity to taste how McLaren Vale wines develop with age. This seven-year-old wine has had time to integrate its tannins and develop secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity that younger wines simply cannot possess. Geoff Merrill is a McLaren Vale pioneer, and accessing older vintages from such an iconic producer provides insight into the region's aging potential and winemaking evolution.

The Hickinbotham Elder Hill Grenache 2016 provides an elegant counterpoint to the robust Shiraz wines in this collection, showcasing McLaren Vale's ability to produce exceptional varieties beyond its famous Shiraz. Grenache typically offers more delicate red fruit flavours, silky tannins, and aromatic complexity compared to Shiraz's power and structure. This particular wine, being from 2016, demonstrates how premium Grenache develops beautiful tertiary characters with age, adding sophistication and variety to what could otherwise be a Shiraz-heavy selection.

Ratings of 95+ points from respected critics like James Halliday, Wine Orbit, and James Suckling indicate wines of exceptional quality that represent the pinnacle of their style and region. These scores suggest wines with outstanding balance, complexity, and aging potential that will continue to develop for years or even decades. The multiple high ratings across this collection from different critics validates the buyers' expertise in selecting truly exceptional McLaren Vale wines that offer both immediate drinking pleasure and long-term cellaring potential.
