2x David & Nadia Grenache Noir 2021

Red — Grenache

Swartland — South Africa

David & Nadia are two new age winemakers who are making waves across the world. Pretty impressive considering the (very) small volumes they make, each bottle as pristine as the next. Their sustainably farmed vineyard in South Africa is planted in deep, clay soils, allowing their old vines to grow flourished. Perfumed with flowers and rich notes of red berries, this Swartland treasure is smooth and gentle. Red fruit forward, its palate is balanced with earthy notes and a little touch of truffle and vanilla. This wine is just light enough to be drunk with lunch and we suggest to pair it with the fanciest charcuterie platter you can whip up. We’re talking all the imported cheeses and meats you can’t pronounce. Add a little bit of raw honeycomb and fresh strawberries and you’ve got yourself a great time.

You'd pay $90 full price.

2x Rall Red 2020

Red — Shiraz Blend

Swartland — South Africa

This Rall Red is a serious and structured style with a couple of years in bottle to settle into its stride. There’s a charmingly rustic quality on display. It’s rich and earthy, with red and black fruit bubbling up from undertones of black pepper and exotic spice. It’d be lost without some refreshing acidity, but that is happily delivered in spades. If you love top-notch wine, but can’t be doing with pretence, this is for you. Just honestly brilliant winemaking and great drinking.

You'd pay $85 full price.

2x Lourens Family Wines Howard John 2020

Red — Grenache Blend

South Africa — South Africa

Franco Lourens named his red blend after his father, a man that has believed in his wine journey from the get go. With 80% whole cluster and nine months in old French oak, texture and layering are the keys to this wine. You’ll find raspberry, cherry, anise and rose on the nose. Have a sip and its the freshness that strikes you first. Stony minerality, briny hints, olive and crunchy tannins round out the palate. Another triumph for this young winemaker.

You'd pay $70 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

South African reds benefit from the country's unique terroir, combining Mediterranean-style climate with ancient soils and diverse microclimates. The Cape's mountain ranges create cooling influences that help retain acidity while the abundant sunshine develops rich fruit flavours. This selection showcases how South African winemakers are crafting wines with both power and elegance, often incorporating traditional techniques with modern innovation to create distinctive expressions that rival established wine regions.

With ratings reaching 97 points from respected critics like Christian Eedes and James Suckling, these wines demonstrate excellent structure for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring potential. The medium-bodied profile suggests they're approachable now but will likely develop additional complexity over 5-8 years. The presence of organic producers in this selection often indicates wines made with minimal intervention, which typically age gracefully while maintaining their fruit integrity.

The diverse flavour profile spanning from raspberry and violets to blackberry and pepper makes this selection incredibly food-friendly. The allspice and vanilla notes suggest wines that complement grilled meats, particularly lamb with herbs or beef with rich sauces. The plum and berry characteristics also pair beautifully with game dishes, aged cheeses, or even spiced vegetarian cuisine, making this collection perfect for entertaining diverse palates.

This collection features some of South Africa's most innovative winemakers, including David & Nadia, known for their natural approach and exceptional Grenache expressions, and Rall Wines, celebrated for their minimal intervention philosophy. Lourens Family Wines represents the boutique family estate tradition that's driving South Africa's quality revolution. These producers are part of a new generation focusing on terroir expression rather than following international styles, creating wines with authentic South African character.

The 'Cult Producer' designation typically refers to winemakers who have developed devoted followings due to their exceptional quality, limited production, or innovative techniques. In South Africa's context, this often means producers who are pioneering natural winemaking, working with heritage vineyards, or creating wines that perfectly express their unique terroir. These cult status wines are highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts, making this selection an excellent opportunity to discover future classics.
