2x d'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz 2018

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

The Maestro

Impossible to overstate the excellence on offer here. This is superb stuff. There is so much complexity and depth to the wine, something new is ready to reveal itself at every sip. Cassis and black cherry out of the gate. Some riper, richer plums and brambles mix with roasted vegetables and sweet spice. It's powerful but never overbearing, full and rich but precise and focused - everything is as it should be. A wine with genuine presence on the palate. Oomph that doesn't veer into being unctuous. The structure of the wine will ensure it is long lived; while drinking brilliantly now, this is a wine with a conservative two decades left in the tank.

You'd pay $78 full price.

2x Mitolo Savitar Shiraz 2020

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

Wonderfully textured, the wine is built around a long mineral acidity which carries intensity through the palate. White pepper, cedar and elegant allspice notes linger throughout the lengthy, linear finish. Matured for 20 months in 85% new French, 5% New American and 10% Seasoned French Oak hogshead barrels - drink it now or dig a hole in your backyard and forget about it. You could age this one for 15 years if you wanted but we're willing to bet you won't be able to keep your hands off it for that long!

You'd pay $105 full price.

2x Pertaringa 'Belonging to the Hills' Shiraz 2021

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

The Pertaringa name is no stranger to the Aussie household. The iconic Hardy family are to wine what vegemite is to toast: a perfect match. So, to land this beauty from the hands of Bec Hardy is monumental for us, and we couldn't be more pleased. This is McLaren Shiraz through and through, with densely packed dark chocolate and fresh roasted coffee exploding on the nose. The palate follows through just as true, layered with preserved plums, dark forest berries and a lick of vanillin softness. There's one word for this wine, and it's awesome.

You'd pay $60 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient geological soils create the perfect storm for world-class Shiraz. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures while the ironstone and sand over clay soils impart distinctive mineral complexity. This combination produces Shiraz with exceptional concentration, elegant tannins, and the signature McLaren Vale characters of dark fruit richness balanced by savoury earthiness that has made it one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions.

These three producers represent the pinnacle of McLaren Vale winemaking across different generations and philosophies. d'Arenberg's Dead Arm Shiraz is legendary for its unique winemaking approach using century-old vines affected by eutypa lata, creating wines of extraordinary depth. Mitolo's Savitar showcases modern precision winemaking, while Pertaringa combines traditional techniques with innovative vineyard management. Together, they demonstrate the full spectrum of excellence that has elevated McLaren Vale's global reputation.

These powerful McLaren Vale Shiraz wines are best served at 16-18°C to showcase their complex flavour profiles of blood plum, chocolate, and cedar. Decant for 30-60 minutes to allow the tannins to soften and aromatics to develop. The rich, umami-driven characters pair beautifully with grilled red meats, aged cheeses, or hearty stews. The tobacco and blackberry notes also complement barbecued lamb or beef with herb crusts perfectly.

The vintage variation from 2018 to 2021 offers a fascinating journey through recent McLaren Vale seasons. The 2018 d'Arenberg represents a cooler, more structured vintage with excellent aging potential, while 2020 was a standout year producing the concentrated Mitolo Savitar. The 2021 Pertaringa captures a warmer season's generosity with ripe fruit expression. This range demonstrates how vintage variation enhances complexity and provides different drinking windows for optimal enjoyment.

These premium McLaren Vale Shiraz wines are built for extended cellaring, with 10-20 year aging potential depending on the producer and vintage. The d'Arenberg Dead Arm will develop magnificent tertiary characters over 15+ years, while the Mitolo Savitar is approaching its drinking window now but will continue improving for another decade. The Pertaringa offers immediate pleasure but will reward patience with increased complexity. Store in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature for optimal development.
