Concentration is the key word here; pure, focused Nelson fruit that absolutely sings. There is an expectation of premium pinot that it has genuine presence in the mouth, this meets and surpasses that expectation. Red cherries and raspberries sit on top of fine grain tannins. The acid is seamlessly stitched into every part of the wine, giving it a real 'line-drive' feel. There's tart winter strawberry and a bit of red apple on offer, too. Most pleasing is the weight of the wine on the palate. A fine example of Kiwi pinot that's ready to drink, but will certainly develop further with a short spell in your cellar.

Fine boned and elegant Nelson pinot from Brightwater Vineyards. An immediate swirl of tart cherry and pretty florals leaps out of the glass. Those aromatics give way to some more intricate anise, dried rose petal, and a savoury grassiness. There is real delicacy and poise at play. That's not to say the wine itself is without body or palate weight; it's got that in spades. A rich fruit profile gives way to a lasting, brightly acidic and fresh finish.

The most recent release from Brightwater Vineyards has all the hallmarks of classic Nelson pinot noir - vibrant juicy fruit that's packing a bit of punch. The fruit is edging toward Turkish delight and raspberry drops but it never veers fully into the confectionary space. Instead it remains focused and luscious and full. The acid drives the wine through the finish, collecting all that fresh fruit vibrancy along the way and delivering it neatly to the back of the palate where it leaves lasting impression. Classic Nelson pinot that promises a lot and still manages to over deliver. So sad to see this producer go, but as they say: all good things...
