Mmm. Mencia, monastrell, garnacha, tempranillo... these are the red wine varietals that have us drooling. Certain Spanish phrases often get lost in translation, but our common shared language is always through wine. Vinomofo has such a privilege of bringing many of these incredible wines to your table, so much so, we almost can’t say no to the great wine that comes across our desks. One cannot resist the urge from genius minds, hands (and palates) of winemaking Spaniards. A quick warning though - this collection of reds will have you drooling too, so crack out the manchego and the jamón and invite a bunch of friends over because this is going to get intense, real fast.

“Rolling, elegant and complex with a resplendent coconut, blackberry, plum and vanilla oak bouquet. Polished oak on the palate with some leafy dark berries, strawberry and black raspberry elements. Mouth-filling, refined tannins rev up, with touches of coffee and chocolate mocha on the lingering finish. 97 Points” – Decanter Magazine

The tempranillo and grenache that go into this blend hail from vines in the illustrious sub-region Rioja Alavesa, known for its incredibly nuanced expressions of the native grapes. We recommend a decant for this one, letting it breathe for a couple of hours before diving in. At this point, you’ll be rewarded with herbaceous, floral, blue-fruited goodness. This is nothing like any Rioja we’ve ever had, and we’re all the better for it. Viva la revolución!

Sourced from 50 year old vineyards in the epic Ribera del Duero region of Spain, we welcome Legón, from Bodegas Vilano. This is their delicious, true to form Crianza with elegance, flair and va-va-voom. Rich and full-bodied, with lively notes of dark, spicy cherry and plum combined with a handful of dried herbs, black pepper, muted oak and firm, grippy tannins create an exciting red that’s ready to be enjoyed. Aged for 14 months in French oak, rested in bottle and shipped to our thirsty shores - this one is ready to go.

“Vega Escal covers 84 acres in the west end of Priorat, in and around the famed vineyard of Gratallops. The 2017 is a blend of equal parts merlot, garnacha and cabernet sauvignon, with small amounts of cariñena and syrah, aged in both French and American barrels. It showcases flavours of blue and black fruit rounded out with notes of fresh vanilla bean and toffee. It smells of wood, but in a pleasant way, with notes of fresh tree bark and whisky. Decant it to let it open up, and serve it with grilled meats. 94 Points” – Wine & Spirits Magazine

Garnacha, or the more local synonym - grenache, utterly thrives in eastern Rioja. Burgo Viejo is a winery run by a collective of local grape-growing families, that know all about grenache. For decades, the harvest was sold off purely as fruit, but, in combining resources - the shared wisdom, skillsets and knowledge, arrived at the decision to create their very own label. And we cannot be more excited. Taking our fave grape grenache - the delicious, lip-smacking red-fruited variety, and blending it with a touch of graciano, is just the thing to do. Our buyer Tully said this wine blew her away from the first smell, and it was love from there on in. Violets and blueberries explode from the nose. The palate is a dance of cherry cola, game meats and a Ribena-like intensity. Having seen little time in oak this is all about the inherent gorgeous fruit, and it certainly delivers on that promise.
