2x Pirramimma Heritage Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Red — Cabernet Sauvignon

McLaren Vale — Australia

Who doesn’t love a little bit of low-yielding, full-bodied, South Australian cabernet? We know we do. Sourced from Pirramimma’s old cabernet vineyards in McLaren Vale, luscious blackberry, blueberry, mint and capsicum notes hum alongside cedar and toasted almond notes from time in oak. Secondary characters of black olive, tobacco and rosemary are starting to poke through as well. No need to rush though as this has another decade plus of development left in the bottle. For now or for the future, the choice is yours.

Red — Cabernet Blend

McLaren Vale — Australia

Here’s another vintage of this absolutely divine wine. Pirramimma are a fave of many (many, many) a ‘mofo, this time delivering their all-Aussie blend of cabernet and shiraz. From three of their best vineyards, including Ironstone, and some vines planted back in the 1950s, this wine shows off arguable the best vines of the region. A fine balance of the sweeter fine-tuned cassis of cabernet, with the plummy, blueberry and black cherry savoury notes of juicy shiraz. If you’ve had the chance to enjoy any of the Pirramimma wine in the past, this is sure to impress.

2x Pirramimma Vineyard Select Shiraz Mataro Grenache 2020

Red — Shiraz Blend

McLaren Vale — Australia

This is your classic GSM blend, but with shiraz leading the charge (which is to say it makes up the majority of the blend). You'll get to borrow from three worlds, here; classic Australian shiraz fullness that offers dense red fruit at the core, blue fruited grenache nuance to give lightness, lift, and a high-tone fresh overture, and mataro adding weight and rusticity to the blend. This is an exceptionally crafted wine from premium fruit and, most importantly (or, solely importantly) the wine is outright delicious. Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

Pirramimma has earned recognition as an iconic producer through their mastery of McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types. Their consistent high ratings, including 95-96 points from Wine Orbit, reflect decades of winemaking expertise in crafting both single varietals and sophisticated blends. The winery's ability to work with everything from traditional Shiraz to innovative blends like Tempranillo Shiraz showcases their deep understanding of what thrives in this renowned South Australian region.

This mixed case demonstrates the versatility of McLaren Vale terroir through a progression from bold single varietals to complex blends. The Heritage Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon showcase pure varietal expression, while the Cabernet Shiraz and Cabernet Petit Verdot blends add structural complexity and age-ability. The Rhone-style Shiraz Mataro Grenache and Spanish-influenced Tempranillo Shiraz represent modern Australian winemaking, creating a comprehensive tasting journey through different winemaking philosophies.

The lineup spans from rich dark fruit characters like blackberry and plum in the Shiraz-based wines to the more structured blackcurrant notes of the Cabernet varieties. You'll encounter earthy minerality that speaks to McLaren Vale's ancient soils, complemented by spice elements ranging from cedar and allspice to more exotic notes. The blends particularly showcase how different varietals can create layered complexity, with each wine offering its own interpretation of the region's signature full-bodied style.

Most wines in this lineup are from recent vintages (2020-2021) and are drinking beautifully now, showing vibrant fruit and well-integrated tannins typical of quality McLaren Vale reds. However, the standout is the 2016 Heritage Cabernet Petit Verdot, which has had additional bottle age to develop secondary characters and soften its naturally robust tannin structure. The full-bodied nature of these wines means they'll continue to evolve gracefully over the next 5-8 years, rewarding both immediate enjoyment and patient cellaring.

The full-bodied, spice-driven character of these McLaren Vale reds makes them perfect partners for rich, flavourful dishes. The Shiraz-based wines excel with grilled meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts, while the Cabernet varieties complement aged cheeses and hearty stews. The unique blends like Tempranillo Shiraz work beautifully with Spanish-inspired cuisine, and the earthy, mineral notes throughout the range make them excellent matches for mushroom-based dishes and game meats.
