If ever there was a grape capable of magic, it’s pinot noir. Little wonder it’s key to many of the most expensive wines in the world.

2x Russell & Suitor Ladera Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2024
Red — Pinot Noir
Adelaide Hills — Australia
When a Tasmanian winery *chooses* to make wine from the Hills, you know they've got their hands on some good fruit. This absolutely leaps out of the glass, right at you! Red berries and strawberries, silky subtle tannin and that little bit of earthiness that the Hills is known for. Yummers. If you talk to a winemaker, every vintage is "hard going" or "challenging". If you talk to the marketing manager of a winery, every vintage is "perfect" or "amazing". It's a rare and special year on which the two can agree. 2024, as it turns out, is a rare and special year for the Adelaide Hills. This wine shows the great concentration of fruit and underlying, dare we say it, Burgundy-esque earthiness that the Hills can impart in those great years. A wine that you're actually meant to enjoy drinking - we have been.
You’d pay $45 full price.

2x Rob Dolan Wines Pinot Noir 2023
Red — Pinot Noir
Victoria — Australia
You'll know Rob Dolan Wines for their reputation for excellence. They've been making some of the most iconic wines of the Yarra Valley and broader Victorian region for decades. This is, of course, no exception to that spirit of excellence; fresh red raspberries and pulpy cherry meat fine, slippery tannin structure. There is sappy acidity that frames the enduring finish. A brilliantly delivered wine from a master of their craft.
You’d pay $35 full price.

2x Thousand Candles Gathering Field Nouveau Pinot Noir 2023
Red — Pinot Noir
Yarra Valley — Australia
In the words of the producer, this wine is "as close as you can get to lying under a vine and squeezing the grape juice into your mouth". There's no mucking around here - just red-hot fruit. Classically Yarra but deeply modern, all at once. 'Nouveau' is a term usually reserved for Beaujolais but why? It simply refers to a style of wine that has undergone what's known as 'carbonic maceration', really basically, this just means that the grapes have been fermented in whole bunches, stems and all! The result is a light style of wine with slightly confected fruit and a very subtle earthiness that adds a whole new dimension. Now, as we see in this wine, the 'nouveau' style suits Yarra Valley pinot noir perfectly. We have a bright, light, red fruited wine with tremendous concentration and those special spiced characteristics you can only get from the Yarra.

2x Twin Valleys Pinot Noir 2021
Red — Pinot Noir
Alpine & King Valleys — Australia
The Twin Valleys pinot noir grabs all that Alpine and King Valley freshness and bottles it up for us to enjoy elsewhere. The lightness and the cool, bright acid line that cuts through this wine brings a satisfying bit of energy to whoever’s lucky enough to have it in their cup (me, in this instance). Winter strawberry and under ripe raspberry on the palate immediately, but there is a bit of darker, richer fruit tucked in behind it. Mulberry and bramble, and a bit of vanillin oak presence, too. A bit of whole bunch lends a slippery, suppleness to the mouthfeel and ties the wine together beautifully. A fine boned, prickly finish that lasts and lasts.
You’d pay $31 full price.

2x Austin's Wines 6ft6 Pinot Noir 2024
Red — Pinot Noir
Geelong — Australia
Geelong is, for me, the best pinot noir producing region outside of Burgundy. Not the USA's Oregon, not New Zealand's Central Otago - little old Geelong on Victoria's south coast.
Fresh and inviting, this will give a lot with just a little swirl in the glass. Raspberry coulis, winter strawberry, some sweet spice, fennel, thistle. The complexity far outpaces its price tag. The wine is structured without sacrificing finesse, which means it's pretty without being thin or wussy. This is dangerous value at $15 and worth stocking up because we don't anticipate we'll be able to hang onto it too for long.
You’d pay $25 full price.

2x Stonehaven Wines Stepping Stone Pinot Noir 2024
Red — Pinot Noir
Limestone Coast — Australia
Sporting a fresh new look and vibe, Stonehaven is back and better than ever. Rich, earthy, and ready to impress. This delicious pinot delivers deep, complex flavours of cherry, red currants, and just a hint of that earthy for that savoury edge that you'd get any half-decent South Australian pinot. The palate is silky-smooth, with a soft, flavoursome finish that makes it way too easy to pour another glass. A modern classic with all the charm and quality you remember, reimagined for today’s table.
You’d pay $22 full price.
