If ever there was a grape capable of magic, it’s pinot noir. Little wonder it’s key to many of the most expensive wines in the world.

2x Austin's Wines 6ft6 Pinot Noir 2023

Red — Pinot Noir

Geelong — Australia

Fresh and inviting, this will give a lot with just a little swirl in the glass. Raspberry coulis, winter strawberry, some sweet spice, fennel, thistle. The complexity far outpaces its price tag. The wine is structured without sacrificing finesse, which means it's pretty without being thin or wussy.

You'd pay $25 full price.

2x Paul Nelson De Taillevent Pinot Noir 2023

Red — Pinot Noir

Great Southern — Australia

Blueberries and raspberries at the fore, layered over vanilla pastry and sweet, seedy blackberry. Some rocky mineral complexity mid palate leads into a full finish that’s brimming with fruit. Certainly nothing wussy or thin here, this is pinot packing a punch (and a dense fruit core, too).

You'd pay $33 full price.

2x Soul Growers Serendipitous Pinot Noir 2023

Red — Pinot Noir

Adelaide Hills — Australia

Sour cherry, classic cassis, raspberry, strawberry, coulis, a bit of nettle. This is a wine that is brilliantly composed - the winemaking pedigree is second to none, this producer champions regional typicity, and the growers of those regions, more so than any other. For that reason the fruit is really championed here, and it shines through in every sip. Let it open up a little in your glass, you'll be rewarded with unending twists and turns as it evolves in front of you. Brilliant pinot - among the regions best.

You'd pay $35 full price.

2x Rob Dolan Wines Pinot Noir 2023

Red — Pinot Noir

Victoria — Australia

You'll know Rob Dolan Wines for their reputation for excellence. They've been making some of the most iconic wines of the Yarra Valley and broader Victorian region for decades. This is, of course, no exception to that spirit of excellence; fresh red raspberries and pulpy cherry meat fine, slippery tannin structure. There is sappy acidity that frames the enduring finish. A brilliantly delivered wine from a master of their craft.

You'd pay $35 full price.

2x Helen & Joey Gruyere Hill Pinot Noir 2020

Red — Pinot Noir

Yarra Valley — Australia

If you’re like us and taste a tonne of wine, you’ll know that getting a glass of Yarra Valley pinot in your hands is like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Not only is it bound to be fresh and vibrant, it’s unlike pinot that you’ll find anywhere else in Aus (or the world for that matter!). Our producer has done us proud, making Yarra pinot through and through. They’ve worked their magic to provide a fruit-forward style brimming with tangy strawberry, cherry, and blood orange, accentuated by a crunchy acid line and fine silky tannins. Put a little chill on the bottle, or don’t! It’ll delight you any way you drink it.

You'd pay $32 full price.

2x Twin Valleys Pinot Noir 2021

Red — Pinot Noir

Alpine & King Valleys — Australia

The Twin Valleys pinot noir grabs all that Alpine and King Valley freshness and bottles it up for us to enjoy elsewhere. The lightness and the cool, bright acid line that cuts through this wine brings a satisfying bit of energy to whoever’s lucky enough to have it in their cup (me, in this instance). Winter strawberry and under ripe raspberry on the palate immediately, but there is a bit of darker, richer fruit tucked in behind it. Mulberry and bramble, and a bit of vanillin oak presence, too. A bit of whole bunch lends a slippery, suppleness to the mouthfeel and ties the wine together beautifully. A fine boned, prickly finish that lasts and lasts.

You'd pay $31 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

This curated lineup showcases Pinot Noir's incredible diversity across different Australian regions and winemaking styles. Rather than committing to one producer's interpretation, you'll experience how terroir, vintage variation, and winemaker philosophy create dramatically different expressions - from the perfumed elegance typical of cooler climates to the darker, more structured styles that emerge from warmer sites. It's essentially a masterclass in Pinot Noir's chameleon-like ability to reflect its environment.

Start with the lighter, more perfumed styles before progressing to the darker, earthier expressions to avoid palate fatigue. The flavour spectrum ranges from bright red fruits like strawberry and sour cherry to deeper notes of black cherry and plum, often complemented by spice and earthy undertones. Consider tasting them over several sessions, perhaps pairing each with different foods - the lighter styles excel with salmon or duck, while the more structured wines complement lamb or mushroom dishes.

Pinot Noir's versatility shines through this collection's range from delicate to robust styles. The perfumed, lighter expressions pair beautifully with roasted chicken, pork tenderloin, or soft cheeses, while the darker, more structured bottles complement game birds, lamb, or earthy mushroom risottos. The spice notes present in many of these wines make them excellent partners for Asian cuisine, particularly duck pancakes or five-spice pork belly.

Most Pinot Noirs in this collection, particularly the 2023 vintages, are crafted for immediate enjoyment while retaining excellent cellaring potential. The 2020 and 2021 bottles have already developed some secondary complexity, showing how Pinot Noir evolves from bright fruit-driven youth into more nuanced, earthy maturity. If cellaring, store them in cool, stable conditions - Pinot Noir typically peaks between 5-8 years but can reward patient collectors with silky texture development and enhanced tertiary aromatics.

Each producer brings distinct winemaking philosophies and regional characteristics to this collection. The Five Red Star Halliday rated wineries represent Australia's elite Pinot Noir producers, while the single vineyard selections showcase specific site expressions that highlight unique soil types and microclimates. The sustainable farming practices employed by several producers often result in wines with greater mineral complexity and authentic varietal character, reflecting a commitment to both quality and environmental stewardship.
