Why do we love this case?

It wasn't Australian's that figured out this mesmerising wine stye - like most wine blends, that'd be the French, and like most French blends, we reckon it was probably an accident. Well, there's nothing accidental about the way we do things here! Clinically, painstakingly selected and blended - hell, we even grow these grapes specifically to be blended. Eat your heart out France - we'll take it from here. Here's our favourite Aus GSMs at the moment.

A regional icon of an iconic region. It’s bright and juicy, with elegant tannin and layered complexity. The palate’s exploding with blackcurrant and raspberry compote, sweet red cherries and licorice. The generous splash of mataro adds a delightful medicinal undertone to this one - wine tonic for all your ailments. It’s plush enough for the winter, and will take a quick chill in the fridge over the heat of summer. No matter when, where, or who you share this with, it’s guaranteed not to disappoint.

2x Tscharke Wines Elements GSM 2023

Red — GSM

Barossa — Australia

This is the kind of thing we've come to expect from this producer - and by that we mean, really, really, really, good wine. The bouquet absolutely leaps out the glass - packed with forest fruits, blueberry, raspberry, mulberry, cherry, plum creating vibrant, refreshing aromatics. Spice plays an equally important role with cacao, dried herbs and lavender adding that necessary savoury touch. Delicate thyme, sage, violet notes weave throughout creating complexity without overwhelming the primary fruit. The palate shows same vibrant nature but cranks elegance and softness higher. Array of flavours poised in great balance - fruit sweetness and savoury structure complementing rather than competing. Seductive generosity gets tamed by precise acidity with plenty of texture threading through. Layered yet straightforward in generosity and fruit presence, forest berries and forest floor hints support fine but very present structure.

2x Turkey Flat Vineyards Butcher's Block GSM 2021

Red — GSM

Barossa — Australia

Comprising of 56% grenache, 38% shiraz and a 6% splash of mataro, expect a plush and fruit forward, medium bodied GSM that is hard not to enjoy. Floral aromatics give way to subtle hints of spice and a minty kick which provides a savoury framing to its dense fruit core.

Barossa Valley’s 2021 vintage displayed such a consistent fruit set that it has gone down as one of the best years in recent memory. Even affordable ‘entry level’ wines (in the hands of skilled winemakers, of course) showcased stunning personality and drive. At this pricepoint, you can crack open a bottle on any night of the week, for any reason and know you’ll be swept up in all the deliciousness and feel very spoilt. Go on, you deserve it.

You'd pay $27 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

GSM stands for Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre - a classic French blend that Australians have perfected with their own distinctive style. This combination creates wines with incredible complexity, where Grenache provides bright red fruit and elegance, Shiraz adds structure and spice, and Mourvèdre contributes earthy depth and tannins. The Barossa Valley's warm climate and ancient soils are particularly suited to these Mediterranean varieties, producing GSM blends that rival the best from France's Rhône Valley.

The interplay between cranberry's bright acidity and blackberry's rich sweetness creates the perfect flavour balance that defines quality GSM blends. Cranberry notes typically come from the Grenache component, providing freshness and lift, while the deeper blackberry flavours emerge from Shiraz, adding weight and concentration. This contrast prevents the wine from being either too light or too heavy, creating a dynamic drinking experience that evolves beautifully in the glass and pairs wonderfully with both grilled meats and Mediterranean cuisine.

Unlike many wines where blending happens as an afterthought, these GSM wines are crafted from vineyard to bottle with blending as the primary goal. The winemakers plant each variety in specific vineyard sites that complement the others - Grenache in warmer spots for ripeness, Shiraz in areas that retain acidity, and Mourvèdre in sites that develop its characteristic earthiness. This intentional approach allows each variety to contribute its best qualities while covering the weaknesses of the others, resulting in wines that are far more complex and balanced than any single varietal could achieve alone.

The 2021 vintage in the Barossa was marked by ideal growing conditions that produced exceptional fruit quality across all three GSM varieties. Cool nights preserved natural acidity while warm days ensured full flavour development, creating wines with both power and elegance. This vintage timing allowed winemakers to harvest each variety at optimal ripeness, resulting in blends with remarkable integration and aging potential. The combination of perfect weather and expert winemaking has produced GSM wines that showcase the very best of what Australian blending can achieve.

Serve these GSM blends at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow their complex aromatics of allspice, plum, and raspberry to fully express themselves. The wine's medium to full body and balanced tannin structure makes it incredibly food-friendly - try it with lamb, beef, or game meats where the spice notes complement the protein beautifully. For vegetarian options, these wines pair excellently with mushroom dishes, aged cheeses, or Mediterranean vegetables, as the earthy Mourvèdre component creates wonderful harmony with umami-rich foods.
