This is cool-climate chardonnay with genuine depth, character and a sense of place that sets it apart from more generic expressions of the variety. The King and Alpine Valleys produce white wines of natural elegance and freshness, with a good bit of rich creaminess thrown in - and this release captures everything that makes the region so exciting. Ripe peach, melon and citrus blossom on the nose, with toasted oak and a whisper of vanilla adding warmth and complexity that draws you straight in. The palate is lush and well-rounded - stone fruit, a hint of tropical pineapple and a creamy butterscotch richness all balanced beautifully by crisp, lively acidity that keeps everything fresh and focused through to a long, satisfying finish. The producers of this wine have put a lot of thought in, so you don't have to. Chardonnays like this are all about balance, and there is a whole lot to balance here: Oak richness, ripe stone fruit and vibrant acidity, not to mention wonderful floral and citrus notes. But as we said, they've put all the thought in - you just enjoy yourself. This is a great example of letting the grape variety shine and it took some real care in the vineyard and the winery to accomplish. Picked in the cool of the early morning hours then racked to tank with some solids added for fermentation. The juice is separated with the majority placed in French oak to ferment and the rest kept to committed to tank. Post fermentation, bâtonnage is introduced to bring an extra textural element and build flavour. The result is a quintessential Margaret River chardonnay with richness, complexity and a lengthy, but not flabby, finish.

Because of the altitude and natural cool-climate of the King/Alpine Valleys, you don't have to worry about these wines being lively - that natural acidy is built into the very core of the fruit from which this wine is made. There's not a lot we can say about this wine that isn't evident from the colour of the thing. Bright, fruit forward, zippy and rich in all the right places. Versatile, vivacious and very, very, very east to drink.

Chardonnay at this price point rarely, if ever, hits this level of palate weight and fruit richness. This is a mid-week wine that doesn't muck about. Creamy pasta, a bottle of this, the couch - what a night. Delightful and approachable. Green apple, citrus, pear, a touch of soft vanilla. On the palate, it's crisp and clean but ripe and weighty, papaya and grapefruit offer ripe tropical flavours and aromatics. The acid is lively and vibrant through the finish. This is a perfect wine to have on hand all summer long, fresh, exciting, energetic, and fruit driven - it'll go with anything and it'll please anyone.

This chardonnay is buttery, rich, peachy, flinty, rounded and ready for a good time, packing all kinds of punches in a sensationally smashable outfit. Padthaway is undoubtedly an underdog region. Not for lack of quality or passion, which comes in bucketloads here. Head inland to find this little gem of an area where the limestone and sandy soils cover the landscape: the beating heart of some outstanding value wines.
