2x Byron & Harold Gravity White Chardonnay 2023

White — Chardonnay

Margaret River — Australia

Wine Pilot's Ken Gargett is expecting 'an exciting future' from this Margs chardy, if you have the self-restraint not to drink it all now that is, telling us to 'enjoy over the next four to six years and expect the score to rise in the next few years'. Right now, though, this is citrusy, creamy, tropical, and floral - a winning combination for us.

You'd pay $40 full price.

2x Twin Valleys Reserve Chardonnay 2023

White — Chardonnay

King Valley — Australia

Hail to the King! The king of white wine grapes, that is. True to it's Alpine home, this greets you with a swirl of citrus and stone fruit. There's a creamy element, too - something like peach cobbler or apricot yoghurt. Deftly striking a balance between richness and freshness, between full-fruited palate weight and fresh, energetic acidity. A delightful wine to say the least - this is versatile and friendly High Country chardy at it's best. Drink or hold.

You'd pay $35 full price.

2x Fetherston Iris Chardonnay 2022

White — Chardonnay

Yarra Valley — Australia

This is a smart little wine, a smart buy too. Very much following the flavour profile of regionally expressive Yarra Valley chardonnay, this wine is tightly wound yet somehow extremely generous. Toasted brioche, roasted nuts and white stone fruits on the nose, the palate opens up with concentrated grapefruit and citrus and wonderfully textured notes of fresh cream. A super well-done wine that punches well above its weight.

You'd pay $32 full price.

2x Alkoomi Wines Family Collection Chardonnay 2024

White — Chardonnay

Frankland River — Australia

With phenomenal fruit intensity, distinctly nutty notes and a gorgeous creamy texture, you'd be completely stoked to pick this one up at the bottle shop for full whack. To get your hands on this beauty for this price is a complete game-changer. Everyone needs a wine or two like this in the rack, you know, just in case. Pink grapefruit, struck match and spicy oak are immediately noticeable on the nose, you'd be forgiven for thinking you were looking at a Yarra Valley chardy. As the palate opens up, however, the wine becomes more regionally expressive; melon, ripe stone fruit and slatey minerality begin to become more overt. It's both bright and highly textured at the same time with an astounding finish of savoury spices, roasted nuts and lingering natural acid. A seriously well-made wine that holds its own against the best the WA has to offer. Is Frankland River the most underrated wine region in Australia? This wine has us thinking just that.

You'd pay $32 full price.

2x Cloudbreak Nouveau Chardonnay 2023

White — Chardonnay

Adelaide Hills — Australia

A refreshing, zippy and elegant chardy with a creamy, malolactic aspect and pristine fruit. After a long day out and about in the sun, we can't think of anything better than pulling this belter out of the esky and sharing a bottle or two with the campsite. That's just us though, this wine also works if you're not camping.
A reviewer, who can't be named (Black Market - you know the drill), described this wine as, "impressive and enjoyable", and that's pretty much the whole point of this wine. Yep, it's made well; vibrant, juicy acid, pristine lemon and white peach and a slight creaminess from partial malolactic fermentation. But this cheeky little number is also a whole bunch of fun; zippy, zesty, refreshing and bright. This really is a great addition to the cellar, for when you feel like a chardonnay but it's a bit hot out for melted butter in a glass. This'll keep for another four or five years but as the winemakers say, "Made to be enjoyed!".

You'd pay $25 full price.

2x Pyren Vineyards Tanwood Chardonnay 2023

White — Chardonnay

Pyrenees — Australia

Delightful and approachable. Green apple, citrus, pear, a touch of soft vanilla. On the palate, it's crisp and clean but ripe and weighty, papaya and grapefruit offer ripe tropical flavours and aromatics. The acid is lively and vibrant through the finish. This is a perfect wine to have on hand all summer long, fresh, exciting, energetic, and fruit driven - it'll go with anything and it'll please anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

This curated lineup showcases chardonnay's incredible versatility across different Australian regions and winemaking styles. You'll experience everything from crisp, mineral-driven expressions to rich, buttery styles, allowing you to discover your preferences while exploring how terroir and technique influence this noble grape. It's like having a guided tasting tour delivered to your door.

The diverse flavour profiles - from citrusy and mineral to creamy and tropical - make this collection incredibly food-friendly. Lighter styles with lemon and nectarine notes pair beautifully with seafood and salads, while the buttery, nougat-influenced wines complement roasted chicken or creamy pasta dishes. This variety ensures you'll have the perfect chardonnay for any dining occasion.

Most chardonnays in this collection, spanning 2022-2024 vintages, are crafted for immediate enjoyment to capture their fresh fruit character. However, the more structured examples with mineral complexity can develop beautifully over 3-5 years, gaining honeyed notes and textural richness. The variety of styles means you can enjoy some now while experimenting with short-term cellaring on others.

The impressive 94-point scores from Wine Orbit and Wine Showcase Magazine, plus gold medals, indicate these aren't just everyday chardonnays - they're exceptional examples that punch above their weight. These accolades from respected critics suggest the wines demonstrate excellent varietal character, balance, and craftsmanship. The 'Dangerous Value' rating particularly highlights the quality-to-price ratio you're getting.

Australian chardonnay has evolved beyond the heavily oaked styles of the past, now showcasing remarkable regional diversity and restrained winemaking. These wines likely demonstrate Australia's ability to produce everything from cool-climate, Burgundian-style expressions with mineral precision to warmer-climate versions with tropical fruit intensity. The collection represents this modern Australian approach that balances fruit purity with subtle oak integration.
