1x Brand & Sons Sanctuary Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Red — Cabernet Sauvignon

Coonawarra — Australia

There's no shortage of accolades for this wine, and we can see why. Intense black cherry and dark, brooding bramble into smokey, spicy, woody nuance. This is beautifully balanced - the acidity and tannin providing a framework for the concentrated fruit aromatics to come alive. A long, enduring fantail finish rounds it out. This is drinking wonderfully, but will go a while in the cellar yet.

You'd pay $150 full price.

1x Brand & Sons Sanctuary Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Red — Cabernet Sauvignon

Coonawarra — Australia

Dark chocolate and cassis leaping out of the glass. Woody, savoury aromatics swirling behind. This is premium cabernet up and down, and speaks distinctly of the Coonawarra region. Powerful and imposing cabernet with genuine presence in the glass. The berries are ripe and rich, giving weight and oomph to the mid-palate. The finish is defined by the assured structure of the wine, speaking to a long future should you have the patience to hang onto a bottle or two.

You'd pay $150 full price.

1x Brand & Sons Sanctuary Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Red — Cabernet Sauvignon

Coonawarra — Australia

Exquisite and ethereal. The 2019 speaks loudly and proudly of place, more so even that the '18 and '16 - this is unapologetic and boisterous while remaining uber-stylish and poised. Blackcurrant and cocoa leaf flanked by ripe, firm tannin and peppy acidity. The fruit is powerful up the middle of the palate, a line drive of red, black, and blue fruited freshness. Some saline mineral character marks the finish.

You'd pay $150 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

This vertical showcases four consecutive vintages (2016-2019) of Brand & Sons' flagship Sanctuary Cabernet Sauvignon, allowing you to experience how Coonawarra's unique terra rossa soil expresses itself across different seasons. Each vintage has earned exceptional ratings, with scores reaching 98 points, demonstrating remarkable consistency in winemaking excellence. Verticals like this are invaluable for understanding how the same vineyard site evolves with varying weather patterns and winemaking decisions.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates the perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to develop intense blackcurrant concentration while maintaining elegant structure. The chocolate and cocoa notes emerge from careful oak integration and the natural tannin structure that Coonawarra is renowned for. As these full-bodied wines age, the primary fruit flavours will integrate with the leather and umami characteristics, creating the complex tertiary flavours that make aged Cabernet so compelling.

While these wines are drinking beautifully now and showing their impressive ratings-worthy quality, they're built for long-term cellaring given their full-bodied structure and Coonawarra pedigree. The tannin backbone and acidity typical of this region will allow these wines to develop for 10-15 years or more. Consider drinking one bottle from each vintage now to appreciate their current expression, then cellaring the remainder to witness their evolution into more complex, tertiary-driven wines.

The rich blackcurrant and chocolate flavours, combined with leather and umami notes, make these wines perfect partners for red meat dishes like aged beef, lamb shanks, or game meats. The full-bodied palate weight can stand up to robust flavours like mushroom risotto, aged hard cheeses, or even dark chocolate desserts. The wine's structure and tannins will cut through rich, fatty foods while the fruit concentration complements the umami elements in aged meats and mature cheeses.

The consistent high ratings (including 98 points from Winestate Magazine) reflect Brand & Sons' mastery of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and their five-star Halliday winery status. The multiple gold medals from prestigious competitions like the Sydney International Wine Competition and Decanter World Wine Awards demonstrate the wine's ability to impress diverse judging panels. This recognition stems from the perfect marriage of Coonawarra's exceptional terroir with meticulous winemaking that preserves the region's signature elegance while delivering impressive concentration and complexity.
