As a general rule, the older the vines, the better the wines. But why? Well, the simplified answer is that as grape vines mature they begin to produce less fruit. As a result, all of the energy, all of the sun and soil, all of the flavour is condensed into less grapes, so you end up with highly concentrated, perfectly balanced fruit with the capacity to create extremely low quantity, extremely high quality wines that could out-last religion. This gorgeous wine is everything you'd expect from these world-famous vines and more. A complex bouquet of dark berries, cake spice, charcuterie and cedar lure in the lucky drinker and sets them up for a beautifully concentrated palate that feels both nuanced and assertive. And that's it, this wine imposes itself on any situation that it finds itself in, in the best possible way. Completely captivating.

It would be quite appropriate to say that this St Hallett is nothing short of an ICON of the Australian wine industry. A well known and universally revered brand. Well, this is their flagship, the Old Block Shiraz, it doesn't get any better than this. A wine that regularly delights the critics and finds its way into the most discerning cellars. Some of the fruit used comes from vines planted over 150 years ago and the wine spends over a year in 25% new French oak. It’s pure silk on the palate, endlessly elegant and surprisingly light on its feet despite the depth of flavour. Plum, cinnamon, dark chocolate, pepper and cedar intertwine, making for some heady drinking. We’re loving how it’s going now, but can’t wait to see it after a decade and then two decades.
