2x First Drop Wines The Zenith Shiraz 2022

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

First Drop wines continue their hot-streak with a big, bold, smooth Barossa shiraz - with 95pts to show for it. Dark fruit, velvety tannins and a big structure, this is about as much Barossa and you can cram into a bottle. Unbelievable value. This is the kind of shiraz that disappears much faster than you'd think. Plush, ripe, fruit-driven, and dangerously drinkable, it delivers everything you want from Barossa fruit - dark berries, savoury spice, and a luscious, big mouthfeel that keeps you coming back. Ten months in seasoned French oak keeps the focus on pure, expressive fruit. It's soft, textured, and perfectly balanced for maximum drinking joy. No overthinking needed here - just pure enjoyment.

You'd pay $60 full price.

2x Ben Murray Wines Grenache 2022

Red — Grenache

Barossa — Australia

Sam Kim called this wine "gorgeously fragrant", we'd go a step further, we'd say it's so fragrant that if you popped a bottle on a Wednesday, you'd still be smelling ripe blood plums on Friday morning. It's not just the nose either, cling onto your socks Mofo, the first sip of this will knock them clean off.
The fruit for this hottie was sourced from 68 to 105-year-old vines in the famed Marananga sub-region of Barossa. Destemmed (with 20% stalks added - it is grenache after all), matured in seasoned French oak and shipped off all around the country to be enjoyed by thirsty little Mofos like us! Seems simple enough right? Wrong! This is where the nuance comes in, the slope of the Marananga hills, the soil type, the brand of the barrels and, most importnantly, the know-how of the winemaker. Luck for us this winemaker knows everything there is to know about the land, the soil, the barrels and whatever else you could possibly think of. A smart wine made by a smart, albeit mysterious, man!

You'd pay $45 full price.

2x Kangarilla Road Silent Noise FO Shiraz 2022

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

It's always assuring to be recognised by your peers and the Gold - McLaren Vale Wine Show, is all the assurance needed for us. A thoroughly modern wine that still holds onto the unmistakably regional flavours that the soil, climate and conditions impart. Ripe cherries, raspberries and strawberries wrap themselves around an energetic acid line and a hearty spice profile. This wine screams "drink me now", it's juicy and fleshy and vibrant in all of the ways that we love. Sure, if you age this wine it will develop, it may even improve, but it will definitely change. Well, we're gonna drink ours now, we don't want it to change at all.

You'd pay $35 full price.

2x Angove Family Winemakers 1886 Barossa Shiraz 2021

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

When we heard 5th generation McLaren Vale legends, Angove, were turning their hand to Barossa shiraz, we sat up and took notice. When we actually tasted the thing, we nearly fell off our chairs. Deep, dark, dense, delicious. This is a complete steal. This wine was crafted using traditional techniques at the historic, century-old Angove winery. After gentle de-stemming, wild fermentation was embraced in open fermenters to let the site’s character shine. Twice-daily hand plunging and pump-overs built colour, structure and complexity. Once dry, the wine was basket-pressed and sent to French oak for a long, slow maturation. Blackberry compote, aniseed and crushed herbs leap from the glass, supported by overt cedar and warming spice. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with a velvety texture that weaves dark plum, mocha and savoury oak into a seamless whole. Bright acidity and fine tannins stretch the finish long and clean. This is Barossa done beautifully. Drink now - it'll last for 10 years in the cellar but just drink it, it's so good right now.

You'd pay $35 full price.

2x Starling Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

Big, fruit-driven and rich, it hits every corner of your palate with pleasing intensity. The oak-imparted tannins make for a ripper time with some charred meat or veg, perfect for that easy weeknight in. Like a good book, wine is not all about what’s on the cover. But we have to say, when you’re getting great vino in some super sleek packaging, it’s a big bonus. This is a big & bold Barossa classic, that doesn't hurt the bank.

Frequently Asked Questions

South Australian shiraz benefits from the continent's unique terroir, particularly the ancient soils and Mediterranean climate that create wines with exceptional concentration and complexity. The region's warm days and cool nights allow for extended ripening periods, developing the rich black fruit flavours and spice characteristics evident in this collection. These conditions produce shiraz with a perfect balance of power and elegance that has become Australia's signature style worldwide.

The vintage variation from 2017 to 2023 showcases how different weather patterns influence wine character across South Australia. Older vintages like the 2017 Lindsay Collection will show more developed tertiary flavours with integrated tannins, while the 2022-2023 wines display vibrant primary fruit and youthful structure. This range allows you to experience how the same varietals evolve over time, making it an excellent educational tasting experience.

The diverse flavour profile spanning from earthy grenache to rich chocolate-noted shiraz makes this collection incredibly food-friendly. The spice and liquorice notes pair beautifully with barbecued meats and game, while the dark chocolate and plum characteristics complement aged cheeses and hearty stews. The collection's varying palate weights mean you can match lighter styles with mushroom dishes and fuller-bodied wines with rich braises.

The exceptional ratings reflect the technical precision and regional authenticity these producers achieve. High scores of 95-96 points indicate wines that perfectly express their terroir while maintaining excellent balance and complexity. Critics particularly value the way these South Australian producers capture the essence of their specific vineyard sites, creating wines that are both immediately approachable and capable of long-term cellaring development.

The collection offers excellent cellaring potential, with the shiraz-based wines typically developing beautifully over 8-15 years from vintage. The 2017 Lindsay Collection is already showing lovely maturity but will continue evolving, while the younger 2022-2023 wines are just beginning their development journey. Proper storage will allow the tannins to soften and integrate while developing complex secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and dried herbs that complement the existing fruit profile.
