Why do we love this case?

We’ve been debating this one for years, which region is making the best of the bold when it comes to famous Aussie shiraz? In one corner, we have the classy Clare Valley, where fruit speaks true and pure. Maybe it’ll be where you can find the world’s oldest shiraz vines, in the beautiful Barossa? Perhaps, you might find that the mighty McLaren Vale is simply unrivalled with its striking styles. Ding ding ding, the battle begins!

2x Kilikanoon Ridgeline Shiraz 2019

Red — Shiraz

Clare Valley — Australia

Kilikanoon...one of the Clare’s absolute best and one of our absolute faves. Ridgeline isn’t just a marketing term for this shiraz. The grapes are sourced from a few rows at the very top of the hill on their Morrison’s Vineyard, overlooking the town of Watervale. There’s a smidge of new oak used here, but the majority is older barrels to the tune of 15 months. This provides a bit of texture and structure while still letting that fruit sing. We found dark cherry, plum, dried herbs and licorice all wrapped up in a savoury blanket with a lengthy finish and ripe tannins. Another hit from a producer that seems to know no other way.

You'd pay $65 full price.

2x Haselgrove Tusail Shiraz 2020

Red — Shiraz

McLaren Vale — Australia

Does it get any better than this? McLaren Vale shiraz with 96pts? From a bloody outstanding producer like Haselgrove? We say, say no more!! But if you’re not convinced yet, it is: 12 days on skins plunging thrice daily for full-throttle texture and flavour (not to mention the colour and tannins!), 20 months in French oak with all parcels kept separate and only blended to the highest standard. The vibrant core of wild berries, rich, savoury dark chocolate, and cedar notes complement. Sounds pretty good to us, are you convinced yet?

You'd pay $60 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

This collection showcases the distinctive terroir differences across South Australia's premier Shiraz regions - Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, and McLaren Vale. Each region contributes unique characteristics: Clare Valley offers elegant, pure fruit expression; Barossa brings intensity from some of the world's oldest Shiraz vines; and McLaren Vale delivers striking, bold styles with coastal influences. Together, they represent the pinnacle of Australian Shiraz diversity in one carefully curated selection.

The collection spans a beautiful spectrum of Shiraz expressions, from blackberry and plum-driven fruit to more complex notes of allspice, black olive, and raspberry. Kilikanoon's Ridgeline typically shows Clare Valley's signature elegance with spice and dark fruit, while Haselgrove's Tusail from McLaren Vale often displays richer, more opulent characteristics. Hewitson's Ned & Henry's brings Barossa's renowned depth and concentration, creating a comprehensive tasting journey through South Australia's Shiraz heartland.

Yes, these wines are vegan-friendly, meaning no animal-derived products were used during production. Traditional winemaking often uses egg whites, isinglass (fish bladder), or gelatin for fining and clarification, but vegan winemaking employs plant-based or mineral alternatives like bentonite clay. This approach doesn't compromise quality - as evidenced by the exceptional ratings these wines have received - and reflects modern, sustainable winemaking practices that many premium producers now embrace.

The impressive scores (94-96 points from respected critics like Ray Jordan and Wine Showcase Magazine) indicate exceptional quality across all three wines. These ratings come from different critics and publications, providing diverse professional perspectives on the wines' merit. The Five Red Star Halliday ratings and Gold Medal recognition particularly highlight that these producers consistently deliver outstanding wines, making this collection represent genuine premium quality rather than marketing hype.

Serve these wines at 16-18°C to best express their complex aromatics and full-bodied structure. The rich, spicy profiles with blackberry, plum, and allspice notes make them perfect partners for grilled red meats, lamb with herbs, aged cheeses, or hearty stews. Consider decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the wines to open up fully. Their bold character also makes them excellent candidates for cellaring, where they'll develop additional complexity over the next 5-10 years.
