Battle of the Bold 2.0 - South Aussie Shiraz
- Rich, full-bodied
- Various
We’ve been debating this one for years, which region is making the best of the bold when it comes to famous Aussie shiraz? In one corner, we have the classy Clare Valley, where fruit speaks true and pure. Maybe it’ll be where you can find the world’s oldest shiraz vines, in the beautiful Barossa? Perhaps, you might find that the mighty McLaren Vale is simply unrivalled with its striking styles. Ding ding ding, the battle begins!
Each case includes TWO bottles of the following:

Kilikanoon...one of the Clare’s absolute best and one of our absolute faves. Ridgeline isn’t just a marketing term for this shiraz. The grapes are sourced from a few rows at the very top of the hill on their Morrison’s Vineyard, overlooking the town of Watervale. There’s a smidge of new oak used here, but the majority is older barrels to the tune of 15 months. This provides a bit of texture and structure while still letting that fruit sing. We found dark cherry, plum, dried herbs and licorice all wrapped up in a savoury blanket with a lengthy finish and ripe tannins. Another hit from a producer that seems to know no other way.

Does it get any better than this? McLaren Vale shiraz with 96pts? From a bloody outstanding producer like Haselgrove? We say, say no more!! But if you’re not convinced yet, it is: 12 days on skins plunging thrice daily for full-throttle texture and flavour (not to mention the colour and tannins!), 20 months in French oak with all parcels kept separate and only blended to the highest standard. The vibrant core of wild berries, rich, savoury dark chocolate, and cedar notes complement. Sounds pretty good to us, are you convinced yet?

If you were the kind of kid that would scream for ice-cream, then you’re probably going to scream for this 94+ points Barossa shiraz. From an iconic ‘5 red star Halliday producer’ like Hewitsonand at well over half price, we understand if you too lose your cool. This shiraz is pure rock ’n’ roll. Packed full of violet aroma and jammy flavour; raspberries, redcurrants, cinnamon spice and chocolate, Barossa juice like this will have you revved up like a kid in summer chasing the ice-cream truck.
