2x Moss Brothers Wild Garden Chenin Blanc 2022

White — Chenin Blanc

Margaret River — Australia

I can’t speak highly enough of chenin blanc - it’s always at the top of my favourites list. This is classic for Margs; pear drop, honeysuckle, and a hint of vanilla at the fore, then gaining complexity as it comes up to room temperature. Think quince, ripe pear, preserved lemon, and a little brioche. A precise, confident expression of Margaret River chenin.

You'd pay $30 full price.

2x Mitolo Jester Vermentino 2022

White — Vermentino

McLaren Vale — Australia

Ahh vermentino, the refreshing white hailing from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, if only more people knew your secrets... that you are oh so deliciously complex in taste yet familiar enough to please lovers of more well-known whites such as pinot grigio, sauv blanc, albarino, and riesling. Tangy pear and apple, bright preserved lemon, salty sherbet and a slippery zesty finish. Light, fresh, yum!

You'd pay $25 full price.

2x Te Quiero White Blend 2020

White — White Blend

La Mancha — Spain

The bouquet on this is to die for. So pointedly floral and lifted. White and yellow flowers and buzzy summer blossom lead the wine, with citrus fruits marking the mid-palate through to the finish. A broad, imposing palate with peppy acidity offering reprieve - this is a well balanced, sure thing crowd pleaser.

You'd pay $22 full price.

2x Gapsted ALTA Bianco White Blend 2020

White — White Blend

Alpine & King Valleys — Australia

When we tasted this lovely spring-time white, our minds drifted to one place and one place only: a sunny picnic in the park. This 1 litre sized field-blend of pinot grigio, fiano and sav blanc is bright, lively and elegant with aromas of fruit salad and tinned peaches. Its light-bodied palate is fun and fruity, dangerously delicious and perfectly paired with sunshine, friends and all of the finger-food your heart can handle. So stock up the esky and go find that prime patch of grassy real-estate... just don’t forget our invite!

You'd pay $25 full price.

2x Windowrie Estate Pig in the House Piquepoul Blanc 2022

White — Other White

Central Ranges — Australia

Picpoul is the keystone to southern France's wine landscape - and by that I mean, it's bloody everywhere. There's good reason, too - it's delicious, fun, easy going, and broadly appealing. The peppy acidity gives it freshness and drive, while the white and yellow fruit aromatics are lively and mouthwatering. I am a huge fan of 'anytime' wines that can wear any hat and please any palate, and this is unequivocally one of them.

You'd pay $25 full price.

2x Matriarch & Rogue Dilettantes Fiano 2021

White — Fiano

Clare Valley — Australia

Based out of the Clare Valley, Marnie Roberts is a dedicated winemaker who chooses specific vineyards that speak to her love of fun, easy going wine. That’s our kind of winemaker! This fiano walks the line of green tropical fruits and preserved citrus, making it approachable on its own, or as the Italians would enjoy it - with food (we’re thinking seafood is called for). There’s a reason why fiano is becoming such a popular variety in Australia, and with this in our glasses, it’s easy to see why.

Frequently Asked Questions

This collection features lesser-known grape varieties like Vermentino, Piquepoul Blanc, and Fiano instead of the usual Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. These alternative varieties offer unique flavour profiles that have been cultivated for centuries in their native regions but are relatively new to Australian palates. They provide wine lovers with an opportunity to explore different terroir expressions and winemaking traditions, often delivering more distinctive and food-friendly characteristics than mainstream varieties.

Given the diverse range of varieties and flavour profiles - from citrusy Vermentino to aromatic Fiano - serving temperatures should vary between 8-12°C depending on the wine's weight and complexity. The tropical and stone fruit notes make these wines excellent with seafood, while the spice and floral elements complement Asian cuisine beautifully. The varied palate weights mean some work as aperitifs while others can handle richer dishes like roasted chicken or creamy pasta.

You'll experience an extraordinary spectrum from honeysuckle and jasmine florals to zesty citrus and tropical fruit explosions. The collection spans delicate varieties showing white peach and pear through to more textural wines with quince and apricot complexity. This diversity reflects different winemaking approaches and grape characteristics, offering everything from crisp, mineral-driven styles to more rounded, spice-inflected expressions that challenge preconceptions about white wine.

Most alternative white varieties are designed for relatively early consumption to preserve their vibrant fruit and aromatic qualities, typically within 2-5 years of vintage. However, varieties like Chenin Blanc and Fiano can develop beautifully with age, gaining honeyed complexity and textural richness. The 2020-2022 vintages in this collection are currently in their prime drinking window, though the more structured examples could reward careful cellaring for another few years.

This curated selection showcases both established and emerging Australian producers who are pioneering alternative variety cultivation across diverse wine regions. The mix includes boutique family operations and innovative winemakers who are passionate about exploring varieties beyond the mainstream, often drawing inspiration from Mediterranean and European winemaking traditions. These producers represent the cutting edge of Australian viticulture, demonstrating how alternative varieties can express unique Australian terroir characteristics.
