Why do we love this wine?

Marchand and Burch is the side project of one of WA’s greatest producers. It’s certainly not an afterthought or casual endeavour though - after all, not all wines can rake in 95+ point reviews like this one has. All the fruit is hand harvested from one of Great Southerns’s most renowned vineyards before being fermented and left to get to know itself for 18 months in a mix of old and new French oak. You’ll find a shiraz that’s more on the elegant side here. There’s layers of ripe raspberries and plums leading the way with secondary characteristics of ginger, anise and cocoa. It’s medium-bodied, but there is an opulence to the wine, seemingly derived from the fruit concentration. Elegance and opulence, the perfect combination.

Review

Ken Gargett

This comes from the best batches the team could source from their vineyards at Mt Barker and Frankland River. It is a cracker, one of the very best wines from the M&B team I have seen. Dark magenta, this has a gorgeous nose. An ideal wine to show just how good Great Southern Shiraz can be. Plums, cassis, spices, coffee beans, cherries and mocha notes. Rich yet restrained, and finely balanced, it is then supple, seductive and seamless. Love it and the ever-so-fine tannins with a slight graphite character that draw out excellent length. This is stunning, and amazing value.
