Why do we love this wine?

The name Jim Barry might ring a bell for many a wine-aficionado. As if the name itself isn’t quintessentially Aussie enough, these wines really are a drop for the true-blue beating hearts.

The McRae Wood Shiraz is comprised of fruit that very nearly made it to ‘The Armagh’, an instant icon of a wine. Not bad, hey? It’s no surprise that this wine has developed its own reputation with a broad set of shoulders and muscles to flex. After all, a 96pt badge from Halliday certainly isn’t an easy feat, top it off with a ‘Special Value’ award to really put this in the major leagues.

Dive into its rich, vibrant aromas of blackcurrant and briary fruits, with hints of vanilla oak and spice. Savour its fine silky tannins, length and persistence. Best of all, it’s made using the ‘Jim Barry’ method to enjoy on release or cellar with confidence. Either way - you win.

Review

Erin Larkin

Matured for 12 months in French oak (20% new). Savoury, spicy and intense shiraz here, with emphasis on the savoury. This has layers of shaved hung deli meat, Amaro herbs, a hint of bacon fat, mulberries, blood plums, salted licorice and tapenade, too. The tannins are firm, promising a long life in front of it, although everything is already so nicely integrated, you could drink it tonight. You could, but you shouldn't – it'll evolve so nicely over the years to come.
